GLEN ALLEN, VA --The Bulldogs (19-21) took a 2-1 lead in the first inning and never trailed from there on the way to a 5-4 win over Claflin (18-22) on Saturday afternoon punching their ticket into the 2024 Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association Championship Game.
Lindsey George (7-8) got the win for BSU (19-21). The right-hander went 3.1 innings, giving up three runs, all of them earned, on two hits, allowing four walks and striking out two. Akirra Pullen started the ballgame and went 3.2 innings, surrendering one run on four hits, walking one and striking out three.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 1-0, the Bulldogs first put runs on the board in the first inning. BSU plated two runs when Jayla Hill left the yard with Presleigh Braxton aboard.
The Panthers failed to push any runs across before the Bulldogs built on their lead in the third inning. BSU scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Hill, which brought the score to 3-1 in favor of the Bulldogs.
Claflin came back to even the ballgame at three before BSU reclaimed a 4-3 advantage in the fourth inning.
The Panthers then tied up the game at four before BSU came back to reclaim their advantage in the fifth inning. The Bulldogs scored once on an RBI single off the bat of Pullen, bringing the BSU advantage to 5-4. The score remained 5-4 for the rest of the game, as the Bulldogs held on for the win.
GAME NOTES
» BSU took a 2-1 lead in the bottom half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.
» BSU went 3-for-6 (.500) with runners in scoring position.
» The Bulldogs' pitchers limited the Panthers to just 1-for-8 (.125) with runners in scoring position.
» BSU pitchers faced 32 Claflin hitters in the game, allowing nine ground balls and six fly balls while striking out five.
» Hill led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBI.
AT STAKE
The Bulldogs will face Claflin in the 2024 CIAA Championship Game on Sunday, May 5. at 1 p.m. from RF&P Park in Glen Allen, VA. This will be the third consecutive year the Bulldogs will face the Panthers in the championship game as BSU looks to complete their quest for back-to-back championships.
