BOWIE, MD – The Bowie State volleyball team (7-13, 4-4 CIAA, 2-3 North) battled past Elizabeth City State (3-13, 3-5 CIAA, 1-4 North) in a thrilling five-set victory (25-27, 25-14, 17-25, 25-21, 15-13) Friday night inside A.C. Jordan Arena. The Bulldogs totaled 50 kills and five blocks in the win.
After dropping a close opening set, the Bulldogs responded in dominant fashion during the second frame, jumping out to an 11-1 lead behind strong play from
Nina Edwards, Lyric Snowden, and
Iman Wright. BSU controlled the set from start to finish, evening the match with a 25-14 win.
ECSU regained momentum in the third, but the Bulldogs bounced back in the fourth
. Abena Asomani-Martin's service ace and timely kills from Wright and Snowden fueled a late surge, while
Nadira Avery closed the set with a decisive kill to force a fifth.
In the final set, Bowie State overcame an early deficit and tied things at 12-12 thanks to a block from
Nicole Taylor. Back-to-back plays at the net from Edwards and Taylor sealed the comeback as the Bulldogs clinched the set, 15-13, and the match victory.
In a postgame interview with BSU Athletics intern Eric Scott, assistant coach
Christiana Dubose praised her team's grit and defensive effort:
"Show your dog mentality here, no ball hits the floor without the body hitting the floor, and they showed out and trusted their training," Dubose said.
