RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Bowie State men's basketball team (0-5) battled wire-to-wire but fell just short in a 65-63 setback to Saint Michael's on Saturday at Draddy Gymnasium during the HBCU Harlem Renaissance Classic.
The Bulldogs controlled stretches of the game and used a balanced scoring effort to put up 26 points in the paint. BSU held a 35-33 lead at halftime after a strong finish to the opening period, highlighted by key baskets from Justin Morrisey and a go-ahead three-pointer from Charles Thomas, III.
The second half featured 10 lead changes as BSU continued to apply pressure. Jaiden McGhee delivered timely scoring, including a layup with 7:49 remaining to put the Bulldogs back on top. Thomas added another triple and knocked down free throws late, helping BSU stay within striking distance as the clock wound down.
With the game tied in the final seconds, STM capitalized with a contested layup and a trip to the free-throw line to edge ahead. Bowie State secured a defensive rebound and called timeout for one last look, but the final attempt would not fall, allowing the Purple Knights to escape with the win.
