BOWIE, MD — The Bowie State men's basketball team opened CIAA play with a 71-60 loss to Winston-Salem State Saturday afternoon inside A.C. Jordan Arena.
The Bulldogs found success in transition, scoring 17 fast-break points, but the Rams maintained control of the pace and held a steady advantage throughout the contest.
Winston-Salem State carried a 31-28 lead into halftime.
KJ West opened the scoring for Bowie State with a jumper, while
Guy Fauntleroy knocked down two 3-pointers to keep the Bulldogs within striking distance. Despite key contributions from
Mike Davis and
Jaiden McGhee, including McGhee's fast-break layup at the 8:15 mark, WSSU's bench production proved to be a difference-maker as the Rams maintained a narrow edge at the break.
The Rams extended their lead in the second half, outscoring the Bulldogs 40-32.
Charles Thomas, III briefly tied the game at 33-33 with a jumper early in the period, but Winston-Salem State responded behind strong inside play from Abou Camara and Tyre Boykin. BSU continued to battle, with Fauntleroy and West providing timely baskets. A late surge, highlighted by
Amir Shaheed's 3-pointer with 1:48 remaining and two free throws from Thomas, III, cut into the deficit, but the Rams held on to secure the win.
