BOWIE, MD — Bowie State head coach
Shadae Swan became the winningest coach in Bowie State women's basketball history as the Bulldogs defeated Livingstone College, 74–65, Monday night inside A.C. Jordan Arena.
With the victory, Swan recorded her 166th career win at Bowie State, surpassing longtime head coach Ed Davis for the most wins in program history. The Bulldogs improved to 7–2 overall and 1–1 in CIAA play. BSU capitalized on 29 points off turnovers and shot an efficient 18-for-21 from the free-throw line to secure the win.
The opening quarter featured a slow offensive start from both teams, with missed perimeter shots keeping the score low. After LC's Breasia Coit opened the scoring,
Mia Smith tied the game with a jumper at the 6:25 mark.
Kristin Sterling added a tip-in, and
Hannah Wilkerson knocked down a three-pointer to help the Bulldogs gain momentum. Despite a pair of timely baskets from Livingstone, a late jumper by
Chaniya Taylor gave Bowie State a slim 15–14 lead after one.
The Bulldogs created separation in the second quarter, outscoring the Lady Blue Bears 24–18. Bowie State responded to an early Livingstone surge with baskets from Wilkerson and
Malaka Cobb, followed by a key three-pointer from
Afia Owusu-Mensah. Free throws by Smith and a late layup by Cobb sent the BSU into halftime with a 39–32 advantage.
Bowie State maintained control in the third quarter, using defensive pressure to force turnovers and convert at the foul line. Sterling provided a spark with a three-pointer and strong work on the glass, while Smith added a triple and a late layup to push the lead to 59–48 entering the fourth.
LC attempted to close the gap in the final period, but the Bulldogs answered each challenge. Smith converted off a turnover early, Cobb added critical free throws midway through the quarter, and Owusu-Mensah sealed the win with a three-pointer in the final minute as Bowie State closed out the 74–65 victory.
