Women's Hoops Welcomes Virginia State for Greek Night

BOWIE, MD -- The Bowie State women's basketball team will return home to host a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Northern Division showdown against the Virginia State Trojans on Tuesday, Feb. 18, for its Greek Night inside the A.C. Jordan Arena. Game time is set for 5:00 p.m., opening the afternoon's doubleheader action.

Clear Bag Policy 
Fans will only be able to carry the following style and size bag into the stadium, all of which are subject to search. 
• Bags that are clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC and do not exceed 12" x 6" x 12" 
• One-gallon clear plastic freezer bag (Ziploc bag or similar) 
• Small clutch bags measuring 4.5" x 6.5" with or without a handle or strap 
• All other bags will not be permitted. A list of prohibited bags includes but is not limited to purses, backpacks, drawstring bags that are not clear, briefcases, coolers, fanny packs, luggage, computer bags, camera bags, binocular cases, and diaper bags. Guests are encouraged to return unauthorized items to their vehicles. Bowie State University cannot safeguard items that are not permitted into the stadium.

The Series 
• This will be the 35th time the two programs will meet since 2009. ​​​​

• BSU holds a 7-3 record in the last 10 matchups against Virginia State. 

•  In their last meeting, Bowie State defeated the Trojans, 69-61 on the road inside the VSU Multipurpose Center in Petersburg, Va., on Jan.29.

Last Whistle  
The Bulldogs (17-7, 11-3 CIAA, 6-2 North) won their last outing against CIAA foe Bluefield State University (9-17, 2-12 CIAA, 2-6 North ) 65-60, on the road this past Saturday. BSU was led by Senior Shelby Ricks who recorded her first double-double of the season tallying a season-high 20 points and 13 rebounds, while Destiny Ryles contributed with 17 points, seven rebounds, and three assists.

Bowie State dominated in the paint, scoring 34 points compared to B-State's 20. The Bulldogs also controlled the boards, outrebounding the Big Blue 39-33, with Ricks leading all players with a season-high 13 rebounds in the win. 

Swipe Season
The Bulldog's defensive intensity has been on notice, as they have disrupted offenses creating scoring opportunities off turnovers. Senior Ryles leads the conference in steals averaging 3.6 per outing. Ryles has tallied four or more steals in eight games this season. Beulah Odiong ranks second on the team in steals recording 41 steals on the season. Odiong recorded a season-high seven steals in the win against Livingstone earlier this season. Ayasha Thomas averages 1.7 steals per game off the bench. Thomas has notched in six steals in her last two games. BSU has recorded 98 points over its last five games off of turnovers. Bowie State ranks third in the conference in steals averaging 11.80 per outing. 

About Virginia State 
VSU enters Wednesday's matchup (19-5, 12-2 CIAA, 7-1 North) looking to extend their four-game win streak after defeating CIAA foe Elizabeth City State University, 71-59 at home this past Saturday. The Trojans were led by Anii Harris who recorded 21 points, four rebounds, and two assists, while Amesha Miller added 20 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Virginia State shot 53.8 percent from the field and held ECSU to 17.6 percent from beyond the arc in the win. 

Through 24 games, VSU is averaging 67.8 points, 40.0 rebounds, 13.0 assists, and 11.3 steals per game. Harris leads the team in points averaging 15.0 points per outing and leads in steals averaging 1.8 per game. Mihjae Hayes leads the conference in assists averaging 3.9 assists per outing. Defensively, Carmen Kweti leads the CIAA in rebounding averaging 12.3 boards per game, and leads the team in blocks averaging 1.1 blocks per outing. Virginia State ranks third in the conference in field goal percentage shooting 41.1 percent from the field and fourth in blocks averaging 2.92 per game, respectively. 

Looking Ahead 
Bowie State will have its home finale hosting CIAA opponent Lincoln (PA) University on Saturday, Feb. 22, at 2 p.m. inside the A.C. Jordan Arena for its Senior Day.
