Ryles 23 Points Not Enough in Bulldogs, 75-52 Loss to Virginia State

BOWIE, MD -- Destiny Ryles and Sydney Anthony combined to score 34 total points, but not enough as the Bowie State women's basketball fell to the Virginia State University Trojans (20-5, 13-2 CIAA, 8-1 North) 75-52 at home Tuesday evening inside the A.C. Jordan Arena in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Northern Division action.

Ryles led the Bulldogs (17-8, 11-4 CIAA, 6-3 North) with 23 points and two steals. Anthony tacked on 11 points and three steals off the bench and Mia Smith chipped in as well with five points and nine rebounds. Led by Smith's three offensive rebounds, BSU pulled down 10 boards that resulted in 15 second-chance points.

BSU forced 17 Virginia State turnovers which reverted into 12 points on the offensive end of the floor in the loss. 

How It Happened
Bowie State struggled out of the gate, falling behind 19-13 at the end of the first quarter. Virginia State kept adding to that lead, building a 30-16 advantage before BSU went on a 5-0 run to narrow its deficit to 30-21, a score that would hold until halftime.

The Bulldog's deficit continued to grow after halftime, and Bowie State faced a 53-36 disadvantage heading to the fourth quarter. BSU played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 15 points in the paint.

BSU narrowed its deficit to 58-43 before going on a 5-0 run to shrink the deficit to 58-48 with 6:02 to go in the contest. VSU responded and outscored the Bulldogs the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 75-52. The Bulldogs got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring 14 of its 16 total points.

» Bowie State played solid perimeter defense, holding Virginia State to 10 percent from beyond the arc on 10 attempts.
