BALTIMORE, MD --Elijah Davis delivered a stellar 25-point performance, but the Bowie State men's basketball team (16-14) came up short against the Virginia State Trojans (18-8), falling 78-72 in the quarterfinal round of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) tournament at CFG Bank Arena on Wednesday night.
The Bulldogs had two players score in double figures, led by Davis, who had 25 points and two steals. Justin Morrisey tacked on 18 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two blocks and Warren Mouganda added eight points. Led by Morrisey's four offensive rebounds, BSU recorded 15 boards that resulted in 20 second chance points.
BSU's defense forced 17 Virginia State turnovers while committing 14 themselves in Wednesday's game. The Bulldogs turned those takeaways into 19 points on the offensive end of the floor. Morrisey's three steals led the way for Bowie State.
How It Happened
After falling behind 4-1, Bowie State went on a 10-0 run with 18:32 left in the first half to take an 11-4 lead. The Bulldogs then surrendered that lead and entered halftime down 37-28.
The Trojans kept widening its lead after intermission, constructing a 63-52 advantage before BSU went on a 5-0 run to shrink the deficit to 63-57 with 5:53 to go in the contest. The Bulldogs were unable to cut further into the deficit by the end of the game, losing 78-72. Bowie State capitalized on 13 VSU turnovers in the period, collecting 15 points off those turnovers.
