ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. --The Bowie State softball team (21-17, 13-0 CIAA, 8-0 North) swept Elizabeth City State in a conference doubleheader on Friday, April 25, at the South Park Sports Complex. The victories marked a milestone for head coach Ed Powell, who earned his 100th career win—becoming just the third coach in Bulldogs history to reach that achievement.
GAME ONE | Bowie State 9, Elizabeth City State 1
Lindsey George earned the win for the Bulldogs, tossing three scoreless innings. The right-hander allowed five hits, walked one, and struck out three. Makayla Drakeford also turned in a strong performance, pitching three shutout innings while giving up just one hit, one walk, and striking out two.
Bowie State struck first in the second inning, with the offense heating up to score five runs. Santanna Puller contributed with a sacrifice fly to drive in a run.
The Lady Vikings were held scoreless as the Bulldogs added three more runs in the third inning, extending their lead to 8-0.
ECSU managed to get on the board with a run, trimming the deficit to 8-1, but BSU answered with another run in the seventh to make it 9-1. The score held from there, as the Bulldogs cruised to a comfortable victory.
GAME NOTES
» Bowie State's highest scoring inning was the second, when it pushed five runs across.
» BSU's pitching staff faced 33 ECSU's hitters in the game, allowing four ground balls and 11 fly balls while striking out five.
» Mykhl Young led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI.
GAME TWO | Bowie State 7, Elizabeth City State 1
Makayla Drakeford picked up the win out of the bullpen for the Bulldogs, tossing four scoreless innings. The right-hander allowed five hits, walked one, and struck out one.
Sydney Seals led the way offensively, going 1-for-1 with a grand slam and four RBIs. Aralynn Robinson also had a strong day at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs. Coreena Dunham contributed as well, collecting two hits in four at-bats.
Bowie State got on the board early, scoring in the top of the first on a bases-loaded walk drawn by Robinson.
Elizabeth City State tied the game at 1-1, but the Bulldogs answered in the third inning. Robinson's RBI single helped Bowie State tack on two more runs, pushing the lead to 3-1.
The Bulldogs continued to shut down the Lady Vikings' offense and extended their lead to 7-1 in the sixth. The big blow came from Seals, who launched a grand slam off ECSU's Oreanna Donaldson.
Elizabeth City State added one more run before the final out, but Bowie State held on for a 7-2 victory.

» Bowie State took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.
» The Bulldogs out-hit the Lady Vikings at a 10-6 clip.
» BSU pitchers limited Elizabeth City State to just 1-for-9 (.111) with runners in scoring position.
