ORANGEBURG, SC -- The Bowie State softball team (26-17) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning and never looked back, earning a 4-2 victory over Claflin (22-23) on Friday afternoon to secure their spot in the 2025 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Championship Game. This marks the fourth straight championship appearance for BSU, as the Bulldogs aim to complete their quest for a three-peat.
Lindsey George started in the circle for Bowie State and earned the win, pitching four innings and allowing two earned runs on four hits, with one walk and five strikeouts. Fellow Bulldog Makayla Drakeford also contributed on the mound, tossing three scoreless innings while giving up just one hit, issuing no walks, and striking out three.
At the plate, Coreena Dunham led the Bulldogs with three hits and an RBI. George also made an impact offensively, going 1-for-2 with two RBI. Mykhl Young chipped in as well, collecting two hits in three at-bats, including a double.
The Matchup
The Bulldogs were first to get on the board, opening the scoring in the third inning with a two-run RBI from CIAA Player of the Year, George.
After the Lady Panthers rallied to tie the game at 2-2, Bowie State quickly responded in the fourth. Dunham delivered an RBI single to put the Bulldogs back in front, 3-2. BSU then extended its lead to 4-2 in the fifth inning with a sacrifice fly from Kyla Richardson.
That score held for the remainder of the game, as the Bulldogs secured the win and punched their ticket back to the CIAA Championship.
