DOVER, DE – The Bowie State football team (1-1, 0-0 CIAA) battled throughout but came up short in a 36-14 setback at Delaware State (2-1, 0-0 MEAC) Saturday at Alumni Stadium.
The Bulldogs showed fight early, answering Delaware State's quick strike with a 13-yard run from Malakai Anthony that set up his 8-yard touchdown pass to Antwain Banks, cutting the deficit to 14-7 midway through the first quarter. Running back Micah Robinson later sparked the offense with a 52-yard burst, while defensive lineman Jamal Jones and the defense delivered key stops to keep Bowie State within reach.
In the second quarter, BSU defense forced a turnover on downs deep in its own territory, but penalties and a safety shifted momentum back to the Hornets. Robinson's long run highlighted the half, though the Bulldogs went into the break trailing 30-7.
Bowie State's best scoring chance of the third quarter came on a drive that reached the 1-yard line before ending on a fumble. Anthony kept the offense moving with completions to Joseph Towler and Xavier Belton, and Robinson continued to grind out yards on the ground.
The Bulldogs struck again in the fourth when Anthony found Ty Lyles for a 21-yard gain to set up Robinson's 21-yard touchdown run, trimming the deficit to 36-14. BSU's defense stood tall in the closing minutes, but the Hornets held on down the stretch.
