Volleyball Opens Conference Play at Virginia State Thursday

BOWIE, MD -- The Bowie State women's volleyball team (2-9, 0-0 CIAA) will open Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) play on the road Thursday, Sept. 25, against divisional rival Virginia State (1-7, 0-0 CIAA) inside the VSU Multipurpose Center. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.

CIAA Weekly Honors
BSU's Nina Edwards was named CIAA Defensive Player of the Week for her standout play over a four-match stretch, including a five-set battle with West Chester and three matches at the Eckerd Tournament. Edwards tallied 32 kills, 13 blocks, and a .492 hitting percentage, anchoring the Bulldogs' front line. Her week was highlighted by 14 kills and seven blocks against West Chester and nine kills with six blocks in a four-set win over Saint Leo.

During the Eckerd Tournament in St. Petersburg, Fla., Bowie State dropped its opener to Nova Southeastern, 3-0, before bouncing back with a 3-1 win over Saint Leo behind a 13-0 serving run from Abena Asomani-Martin and strong play from SnowdenEdwards, and TaylorMadyson Brinson delivered the clinching kill against the Lions, while Snowden and Loundmon fueled runs in a competitive three-set loss to host Eckerd to close the weekend.

Scouting Virginia State
VSU enters CIAA play still searching for consistency after a challenging nonconference slate. The Trojans have been dominant at the net, ranking first in the CIAA in team blocks (2.58 avg.), paced by Morgan Green, who is second in the conference individually with (1.17 avg.). Offensively, Gracie Darville leads the team with 2.92 kills per set, while Amaya Cooper (1.77) and Skylar Johnson (1.81) provide secondary scoring. Setter Peyton Reese directs the attack with 5.11 assists per set, and libero Kellee Craig, the CIAA leader in digs (4.63 avg.), anchors the defense. Green also contributes as a consistent server, leading the team with nine aces.

Trojans Last Timeout
Virginia State wrapped up play at the UNC Pembroke Invitational with a pair of tough losses, falling 3–0 to Eckerd College and 3–1 to Coker University. The Trojans battled in every set, led by Darville, who finished with nine kills against Eckerd and a match-high 19 against Coker, while Celene Mclean added efficient scoring and strong back-row play. Johnson contributed across the weekend with multiple kills and digs. Setter duo Leila Jackson and Peyton Reese paced the offense with 48 combined assists, helping VSU total 52 kills, 69 digs, and eight aces in the final match.

The Bulldogs will continue CIAA play on Monday, Sept. 29, with a road matchup against Elizabeth City State in Elizabeth City, N.C. First serve is set for 6 p.m. at the R.L. Vaughan Center.
