CIAA Northern Division Race Heats Up as Bowie State Hosts Virginia Union

BOWIE, MD — The Bowie State men's and women's basketball teams are prepared to host Virginia Union University on Saturday, Feb. 14, for a key Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Northern Division doubleheader match-up in A.C. Jordan Arena.
 
The women's contest tips off at 2 p.m., followed by the men's game at 4 p.m. Both games will stream live on the Bulldog Sports Network.

Clear Bag Policy
Fans may bring only the following items into the arena (all items are subject to search):
  • Clear plastic, vinyl, or PVC bags not exceeding 12 x 6 x 12 inches
  • One-gallon clear plastic freezer bags (e.g., Ziploc)
  • Small clutch bags measuring 4.5 x 6.5 inches, with or without a strap
All other bags are prohibited, including purses, backpacks, non-clear drawstring bags, briefcases, coolers, fanny packs, luggage, computer bags, camera bags, binocular cases, and diaper bags. Fans are encouraged to return unapproved items to their vehicles. Bowie State University cannot store items not permitted in the arena.
 
Game Promotion
Bowie State will celebrate alumni while raising awareness for breast cancer. Former student-athletes and graduates will be recognized during halftime, featuring an alumni seating section, a group photo, a postgame social, and special giveaways. Early-arriving fans will receive pink pendants.
 
Women's Basketball Series History
  • The all-time series is tied 19–19, dating back to Jan. 22, 2009.

Scouting the Bulldogs | Women
Bowie State enters the matchup with a 15–7 overall record and an 8–5 mark in CIAA play, and sits tied first in the Northern Division with a 6-1 record, building its success around one of the conference's most disruptive defenses.

The Bulldogs allow just 56.7 points per game, force 22.0 turnovers per contest, and rank among the CIAA leaders with 11.8 steals and 5.7 blocks per game. Bowie State also owns a +9.3 scoring margin, one of the best in the league.

Offensively, BSU averages 66.0 points per game and shoots .756 from the free-throw line, making 17.0 free throws per contest. The Bulldogs feature balanced production, led by Malaka Cobb (10.1 ppg) and Mia Smith (9.6 ppg), with nine players averaging at least four points per game.

Defensively, Bowie State has been strongest late, outscoring opponents in the fourth quarter and holding teams to .340 shooting from the field. The Bulldogs' interior presence anchors a unit that ranks among the CIAA's best in shot blocking and defensive rebounding.

  • The Lady Panthers average 63.5 points per game while allowing 55.0, producing a +8.4 scoring margin.
  • VUU shoots .397 from the field and averages 5.1 three-pointers per game, among the league leaders.
  • The Lady Panthers control the glass, averaging 38.8 rebounds per game with a +2.7 rebounding margin.
  • Virginia Union averages 12.5 assists per game and owns a strong assist-to-turnover ratio (0.8).

Scouting the Bulldogs | Men
The Bulldogs average 68.0 points per game this season while shooting 40.2% from the field and 30.4% from three-point range.

Jaiden McGhee (13.3 ppg, 5.1 rpg) and KJ West (13.8 ppg, 5.3 rpg) pace BSU offensively, combining for more than 27 points per game. West also leads the team in assists, serving as the primary facilitator.

Joseph Allen adds 12.0 points and 5.9 rebounds per contest while shooting 52.3% from the floor, providing efficiency in the paint and rim protection.

Guy Fauntleroy anchors the perimeter attack with a team-best 48 three-pointers, averaging 10.6 points per game and stretching opposing defenses.

Defensively, Bowie State averages 7.8 steals and 3.6 blocks per game but has been outrebounded by an average of 5.8 boards per contest. Limiting second-chance opportunities and improving shooting efficiency will be key factors.
