GLENVILLE, W.V. — The Bowie State softball team (1-7) closed out play at the Sue Morris Classic with a split on the final day at the Sue Morris Sports Complex, defeating West Virginia Wesleyan College 4-2 before falling 4-2 to West Virginia State University on Saturday.
Bowie State 4, West Virginia Wesleyan 2
The Bulldogs used timely hitting and capitalized on four West Virginia Wesleyan errors to secure their first win of the season.
Both teams were scoreless through two innings before WVWC took a 1-0 lead in the third on a throwing error. Bowie State answered in the fourth when
Kyla Richardson, pinch running for
Mikayla Amos, scored on a fielding error to even the game at 1-1. WVWC regained a 2-1 advantage on a solo home run in the bottom of the inning.
Bowie State responded in the fifth.
Coreena Dunham doubled and later scored on a single by
Presleigh Braxton. Braxton crossed the plate on an RBI single from
Mikayla Amos to give the Bulldogs a 3-2 lead. In the sixth,
Lisa Frias doubled before
Angelina Nguyen-Nhu delivered an RBI single up the middle to extend the advantage to 4-2.
Sydney Seals was dominant in the circle, tossing a complete game with 13 strikeouts. She allowed just one earned run on five hits over seven innings, walked four and threw 83 strikes in 119 pitches to earn her first win of the season.
Braxton paced the offense, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Amos added a hit and an RBI, while Dunham contributed a double and scored a run.
West Virginia State 4, Bowie State 2
In the second game of the day, BSU was unable to overcome an early deficit against West Virginia State.
WVSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single. The Yellow Jackets added a run in the second on an RBI double and pushed the margin to 4-0 in the fourth with an RBI single.
The Bulldogs mounted a comeback in the sixth inning.
India Stokes scored on a wild pitch, and
Margaret-Malaika Weaver later came home on an RBI single by Braxton to cut the deficit to 4-2. However, Bowie State could not push across any additional runs in the seventh.
Aaliyah Amos pitched a complete game, allowing five hits and four runs (two earned) over six innings. She struck out four and walked three while keeping the Bulldogs within striking distance.
Taylor Dawkins led the offense with a triple, while Stokes recorded a hit and scored a run. Braxton added her second RBI of the day in the loss.
