Bulldogs Finish Season Sweep of Bluefield State with 78-73 Road Win

BLUEFIELD, W.V. — The Bowie State women's basketball team forced a season-high 22 steals and posted its highest point total of the season to edge Bluefield State University, 78-73, in CIAA Northern Division action Saturday afternoon inside Ned Shott Gymnasium.

The Bulldogs (14-7, 7-5 CIAA, 5-1 North) paired relentless defensive pressure with timely scoring, overcoming an early deficit to secure the road win. Bowie State also recorded a season-high eight blocks.

BSU opened the scoring with two free throws from Kristin Sterling, but Bluefield State responded quickly behind Jasmine Jenkins. Jenkins scored 11 of her game-high first-quarter points as the Big Blue capitalized on 12 Bowie State turnovers and controlled the glass, taking a 23-14 lead after one.

The Bulldogs surged in the second quarter, outscoring BState 27-16 to swing momentum. Gabrielle Clary sparked the run at the free-throw line, while Jada Bouknight controlled the paint with key offensive rebounds. Afia Owusu-Mensah drained a clutch three-pointer at the 1:53 mark to tie the game at 38, then added a free throw late to give BSU a 41-39 halftime advantage.

Bluefield State answered in the third quarter, edging the Bulldogs 17-14. Jenkins reclaimed the lead with a layup midway through the period, but Bowie State stayed within striking distance. Sterling connected on a pivotal three-pointer, and Sydney Anthony tied the game at 55 with two free throws before Jhakia Gist converted at the line to give the Big Blue a 56-55 edge entering the final quarter.

The Bulldogs delivered in the fourth, leaning on defensive intensity and poise at the free-throw line. Anthony ignited the closing stretch with a steal and midrange jumper, while Bouknight added a key layup and sealed the game with two free throws in the final second. Despite a late three-pointer from Gist, Bowie State capitalized on turnovers and controlled the closing moments to secure the five-point victory.
