Bowie State University Head Men’s Basketball Coach Darrell Brooks Retires

 BOWIE, MD — Bowie State University Head Men's Basketball Coach Darrell Brooks is retiring following a renowned 40-year coaching career, including 16 years with the university, his beloved alma mater. His career record is 251-241. 

"It has been the honor of a lifetime to serve as the head men's basketball coach at Bowie State University," said Brooks. "I am grateful to all the players, assistant coaches, managers, administrators, alumni and fans who have supported our program throughout my tenure. Bowie State is such a special place. My family and I will always cherish the relationships and memories we've built here."

 A Brooklyn, New York native, Brooks is a two-time Bowie State graduate, earning a bachelor's degree in communication in 1979 and a master's on organizational communications in 2019. He was also a two-year letterwinner for the Bulldogs at point guard. 

During his tenure, Coach Brooks led the Bulldogs to an overall record of 244-234 (140-108 CIAA), capturing five Northern Division championships along with Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Tournament Championships in 2013 and 2017. The Bulldogs made three National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) regional tournament appearances under his leadership, advancing to the 2011 regional semifinals. Brooks was named Bowie State Male Coach of the Year four times (2010–2011, 2011–2012, 2012–2013 and 2014–2015) and CIAA Coach of the Year in 2014–2015. He became the program's all-time winningest head coach in January 2022 after earning his 200th career victory. During his last season with Bowie State Bulldogs, the men's basketball team reached the CIAA Quarterfinals at the 2026 CIAA Tournament.

"Coach Brooks' leadership has been extraordinary," said Interim VP for Intercollegiate Athletics & Recreation Dr. Jolisa Williams. "His commitment to excellence, his ability to inspire student‑athletesand the pride he brought to Bowie State University leaves an indelible mark on our athletics program. We are deeply grateful for his four decades of service and the championship culture he helped build. While we will miss his presence on the sideline, we look forward to remaining connected and continuing to celebrate his enduring legacy within the Bulldog family."

Prior to joining Bowie State, Brooks spent eight years as an assistant coach at George Washington University (GW), helping to lead the Colonials to four straight postseason appearances, including three consecutive NCAA Tournaments. GW won two Atlantic 10 Tournament championships during his tenure and went 16‑0 in conference play in 2006, finishing the season ranked as high as No. 6 nationally.

He also served as head coach at Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) during the 2000‑01 season, where his team ranked among the top three in the Centennial Conference in scoring, assists, 3‑pointers and steals. His assistant coaching experience includes roles at Loyola University, George Mason University, American University, William & Mary, Central State University and Bowie State. Brooks also directed Camp Austral in Maliano, Spain, from 1991 to 1995. 

Brooks is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the National Basketball Coaches Association and the Black Coaches Association. He also served on the NCAA Division II National Basketball Committee from 2019 to 2023.
