RALEIGH, N.C. — The Bowie State softball team (8-12, 4-0 CIAA) continued its strong showing at the CIAA Round-Up on Friday, earning two victories on day two with a 7-4 win over Fayetteville State in game one and a 4-2 victory over Winston-Salem State in the nightcap at Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
Game One: Bowie State 7, Fayetteville State 4
Bowie State jumped out to an early lead, plating three runs in the first inning.
Coreena Dunham reached base and scored on a bunt single by
Presleigh Braxton.
Mikayla Amos followed with an RBI double to center field, and
Audrey Newell capped the inning with an RBI double to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 advantage.
After several scoreless innings, Newell extended the lead with a solo home run in the fifth to make it 4-0.
Fayetteville State got on the board in the sixth with a solo home run, but BSU answered in the seventh with three more runs. Dunham highlighted the inning with a home run as the Bulldogs built a 7-1 lead.
FSU mounted a late rally with three runs in the seventh, but Bowie State held on to secure the 7-4 victory.
Game Two: Bowie State 4, Winston-Salem State 2
In the nightcap, the Bulldogs used a key third inning to take control after Winston-Salem State scored the game's first run.
Nala Bain ignited the offense with a double before Braxton delivered an RBI single to tie the game. Amos followed with a base hit, and Newell reached on a fielder's choice that allowed two runs to score, giving Bowie State a 3-1 lead.
BSU added an insurance run in the fourth inning when
India Stokes singled and later scored on Braxton's second RBI single of the contest to extend the lead to 4-1.
WSSU added a run in the seventh, but the Bulldogs' defense held firm to complete the 4-2 win.
Sydney Seals tossed a complete game in the circle, recording nine strikeouts while allowing just two earned runs.
