Dawkins Powers Bulldogs as Bowie State Splits with Millersville

BOWIE, MD — The Bowie State softball team (15-17) split a nonconference doubleheader against Millersville (18-20) on Tuesday, rallying for an 11–8 win in Game One before falling 5–3 in Game Two at the BSU Softball Complex.

Game One: Bowie State 11, Millersville 8
Bowie State used a late offensive surge to erase an early deficit and secure the comeback victory.

Millersville struck first in the second inning, plating three runs to take a 3–0 lead. The Bulldogs responded in the third as Coreena Dunham delivered a two-run single, with additional production from Mikayla Amos and Audrey Newell trimming the deficit.

In the fourth inning, Taylor Dawkins launched a three-run home run to pull BSU within striking distance. The Marauders added a solo homer to maintain a 7–5 advantage, but the Bulldogs broke through in the sixth inning.

Bowie State erupted for six runs in the frame, highlighted by RBIs from Dawkins, Amos, Samiyah Abdul-Khabir and Makayla Drakeford to take an 11–8 lead. The Bulldogs held Millersville scoreless in the seventh to seal the win.

Makayla Drakeford earned the victory in the circle, allowing one earned run on two hits over five innings with three strikeouts.

Game Two: Millersville 5, Bowie State 3
Millersville used early offense and timely hitting to secure the split.

The Marauders opened the scoring in the first inning with a two-run home run. They extended their lead in the fifth with three additional runs, including a solo homer, to take a 5–0 advantage.

Bowie State answered in the bottom of the fifth as Dawkins connected on a two-run home run to cut the deficit to 5–2. Nala Bain added a solo homer in the seventh, but the Bulldogs could not complete the comeback.

Aaliyah Amos pitched a complete game, striking out nine over seven innings while allowing five runs on seven hits.

The Bulldogs will return home on Saturday, Apr. 18, to host CIAA foe Lincoln (PA) University for a doubleheader at the BSU Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
