Softball Erupts for 28 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep over Elizabeth City State

BOWIE, MD — The Bowie State softball team (19-19, 14-0 CIAA, 8-0 North) earned a dominant sweep of Elizabeth City State (3-20, 2-12, 0-8 North) in a CIAA doubleheader at the BSU Softball Complex, winning 17-4 in game one and 11-3 in the nightcap.

Bowie State broke the game open with a 14-run second inning en route to a 17-4 victory.

Sydney Seals sparked the rally with a leadoff walk, and pinch runner Natalia Jarquin later scored on a single by Santanna Puller. Mikayla Amos and Puller both crossed the plate on a first base error, while Margaret-Malakai Weaver reached on another miscue that allowed two additional runs to score.

Coreena Dunham followed with a single, and Presleigh Braxton added a two-RBI single. Taylor Dawkins reached on an error that brought in two more runs before Dunham capped the inning with a grand slam, giving BSU a 14-0 lead after two innings.

Elizabeth City State scored once in the third, but Bowie State responded with Nya Howard scoring on a Ja'chelle Mosley single to extend the lead to 15-1. The Lady Vikings added three runs in the fourth, but the Bulldogs answered with two more to seal the 17-4 win.

Seals earned the win, allowing three hits and one unearned run over three innings while striking out five, and issuing no walks.

Game Two – Bowie State 11, Elizabeth City State 3
BSU carried its momentum into game two, securing an 11-3 win to complete the sweep.

Braxton got things started with an inside-the-park home run in the first inning. Dawkins followed with a bunt single, and Aaliyah Amos added an RBI double to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead.

In the third inning, Braxton walked, advanced on a single by Mikayla Amos and stole home to extend the lead. Bowie State added four runs in the fourth, highlighted by RBI doubles from Dawkins and Amos.

The Bulldogs continued to add on in the fifth when Alycia Searwar scored on a single by Ryan Fraser. In the sixth, Jarquin and Richardson both scored on a double by Puller to close out the 11-3 victory.

Aaliyah Amos threw a complete game, allowing five hits and three runs (two earned) over six innings. She struck out seven and walked three.

The Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday, May. 2, as Bowie State hosts the Big Blue of Bluefield State for Senior Day. Doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the BSU Softball Complex.
