BOWIE, MD – The Bowie State University Department of Athletics celebrated the remarkable career and lasting impact of longtime men's basketball head coach Darrell Brooks during a special ceremony held on Wednesday, May 27, on the beautiful campus of Bowie State University.

A true Bulldog through and through, Brooks' connection to Bowie State University spans decades, first as a student-athlete, then as an assistant coach, and ultimately as the leader of the Bulldogs men's basketball program for the past 16 seasons.

The Brooklyn, N.Y. native, arrived at Bowie State as a student-athlete and became a two-year letterwinner at point guard before earning his Bachelor's degree in Communications in 1979. He later completed his Master's degree in Organizational Communications in 2019, further cementing his lifelong bond with the institution.

The celebration featured remarks from Bowie State University's 10th President, Dr. Aminta H. Breaux, Interim Vice President of Athletics and Recreation, Dr. Jolisa Williams, Brooks' wife, Sandra Brooks, along with former players, colleagues, family members, and supporters whose lives have been impacted by his leadership and mentorship throughout the years.

Since taking over the program, Brooks has guided the Bulldogs to sustained success on the court and elevated Bowie State men's basketball to one of the premier   programs in the CIAA. Over 16 seasons, Brooks compiled an overall record of 259-233, including a 140-108 mark in CIAA play, while capturing five CIAA Northern Division   Championships and CIAA Tournament titles in 2013 and 2017.

Under Brooks' leadership, Bowie State earned three NCAA Regional Tournament appearances, including a run to the 2011 NCAA Regional Semifinals. In January 2022,   Brooks became the winningest head coach in program history after securing his 200th career victory.

Brooks' impact extends far beyond wins and championships. Known for his mentorship, leadership, and commitment to student-athlete development, he has helped   shape generations of Bulldogs both on and off the court.

His coaching résumé includes stops at several respected programs, including George Washington University, where he helped guide the Colonials to four consecutive postseason appearances and three straight NCAA Tournament berths. Brooks also served in coaching roles at Loyola University, George Mason University, American University, William & Mary, Central State University, Western Maryland College, and Bowie State.

Throughout his career, Brooks has earned numerous accolades, including four Bowie State Male Coach of the Year honors and CIAA Coach of the Year recognition during the 2014-15 season.

Outside of basketball, Brooks remains deeply involved in the community and his faith, serving as a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the National Basketball Coaches Association, the Black Coaches Association, The Mighty Men of Reid Temple Choir, and the gospel group Spiritual Minds.

Wednesday's celebration served as a reflection of Brooks' lifelong dedication to Bowie State University and the countless lives he has impacted throughout his journey as a Bulldog.

From student-athlete to head coach, Darrell Brooks' legacy at Bowie State University will forever remain a cornerstone of Bulldog basketball history.
