After a successful high school campaign where he was a three-star recruit, he accepted a scholarship to Virginia Tech University here he starred as a Defensive Back and special teams player under Frank Beamer, playing an intricate part of continuing the 23 game bowl appearances for the Hall of Fame (HOF) coach. Participating in the Sugar, Peach, and Gator bowl. While at Virginia Tech, Minor earned All-ACC honors as a redshirt freshman and sophomore excelling on Beamer’s Pride and Joy teams (Punt and Punt Return). While a member of the Hokies football program, Minor was a part of the #1 ranked defense two seasons in a row. Learning from future HOF defensive coordinator Bud Foster and Defensive back coaches Lorenzo Ward (Louisville) and Torrian Gray (Washington Redskins). Roland was ranked as high as the #7 corner in all of college football before suffering an off the field injury that would derail his playing career.
After Virginia Tech he was invited to workout for the Washington Redskins. Following that he played briefly in the Arena 2 league in Albany, N.Y. Only playing half the season, he still managed to tally eight Interceptions in eight games. After pursuing some interest with the CFL, Minor hung up his cleats and picked up the whistle.
Minor began his coaching career at Washington, D.C.’s Dunbar High School under then Head coach Jerron Joe. While there for two seasons, the Crimson Tide boasted the best special teams in the DCIAA, only allowing one return for a touchdown the entire season. Adding 10 blocked punts and multiple returns for touchdowns both kickoff and punt return. Once on the staff at his alma mater (H.D. Woodson), he was tasked with helping the defensive backs and special teams. This is where the success continued and now under the tutelage of Gregory Fuller as a Coach, he learned more about the mentoring and player development of the young men they were working with. Assisting in the record-setting championship years over a five seasons, helping over 30 student-athletes obtain scholarships since 2012 when he first started coaching from Premier D2 programs to major Division 1 programs.Â
