Roy Jones

  • Title
    Running Backs
Roy Jones begins his sixth overall season with the Bulldogs and will be responsible for the running backs.

Prior to his return to Bowie State, Jones served as the director of football operations and tight ends coach and has spent the past decade on the sidelines with former NCCU head coach Henry Frazier III, including three seasons at Bowie State (2001-03) as wide receivers coach and the last seven seasons at Prairie View as tight ends coach and operations director.

After serving in the United States Marine Corps following high school graduation, Jones spent eight seasons as an assistant coach in Maryland high schools, with stops at his alma mater Bladensburg (1993-97), Central (1998-99) and Eleanor Roosevelt (2000).

The Washington, D.C., native earned a bachelor’s degree from Prairie View in 2007.

While in charge of the team’s tight ends at Prairie View, Jones’ unit has played a key role in the rise of the Panthers' offense over the past several years. In 2008, Prairie View’s ground game led the SWAC in rush offense as the tight ends helped block for a unit that averaged 172.7 yards per game and scored 23 rushing touchdowns. The tight ends also played a big role in the pass game as they set career-highs in both receptions and yards.

During Prairie View’s history-making 2007 campaign, the tight ends provided stability for an offensive unit that passed for its most yards during the Henry Frazier III era. In 2005 and 2006, the tight ends helped the Panthers’ ground game rank as one of the top in the SWAC.

Jones came to Prairie View in the summer of 2004 after spending three seasons at Bowie State.

Jones graduated from Bladensburg High School in Bladensburg, Md. Upon graduating from high school, he entered the United States Marine Corps before entering the coaching ranks at his alma mater in 1993.

He spent three years at Bladensburg as the team’s head junior varsity coach before moving to Central High School in Capitol Heights, Md., as the team’s offensive coordinator for two years. In 2000, he moved to Eleanor Roosevelt High School in Greenbelt, Md., and coached wide receivers. Jones joined the collegiate ranks in 2001 when he became an offensive assistant and wide receivers coach at Bowie State University under Frazier.

Jones is married to the former Shawneen Elmore of Logan, W. Va. He has three kids: Demetrius, Diamond and Darius.
