Ed Powell will enter his seventh season as head coach of the Bowie State University softball program in 2026.
Under Powell’s guidance, the Bulldogs continued their dominance in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), capturing their third-straight CIAA Championship in 2025. Bowie State finished the season with a 27-20 overall record and a perfect 15-0 mark in conference play, extending the program’s reign atop the league standings.
The 2025 season was a historic one for the Bulldogs, as Powell was named the CIAA Coach of the Year and Lindsey George earned CIAA Player of the Year honors. In total, Bowie State produced six All-CIAA selections: Coreena Dunham, Jayla Hill, Taylor Dawkins, Makayla Amos, Mykhl Young, and Ja’chelle Mosley. Both George and Dunham were also named to the 2025 D2CCA All-Atlantic Region Softball Team, further highlighting the program’s championship pedigree.
The Bulldogs ranked among the CIAA’s top statistical leaders, leading the conference in RBIs (231), runs scored (270), hits (346), doubles (72), and home runs (28). Offensively, Bowie State posted a .284 team batting average, while its pitching staff compiled a 3.92 ERA, showcasing the team’s balance and depth. Dunham led the Bulldogs at the plate with a .398 batting average, 51 runs, and 30 stolen bases, while George was a dual threat, posting a 12-9 record in the circle and a .349 batting average offensively.
In 2024, Powell guided the Bulldogs to their second-straight CIAA Championship, finishing 20-16 overall and 11-5 in conference play. Four Bulldogs earned All-CIAA honors that year — Ellianna Henneberg, Akirra Pullen, Jayla Evans, and Presleigh Braxton — while Jayla Hill was named the CIAA Tournament MVP after leading the league in hits and doubles.
The 2023 campaign marked a historic milestone for the program, as the Bulldogs set a program record with 35 wins (35-16), won the CIAA Northern Division title, and earned victories over several ranked opponents. Powell coached seven All-CIAA selections that season, including Lindsey George (CIAA Player of the Year) and Jayla Hill, both of whom were named to the D2CCA All-Atlantic Region and HBCU All-Star teams.
Since taking the reins in 2020, Powell has transformed the Bulldogs into a perennial powerhouse, guiding the team to three consecutive CIAA Championships, multiple All-Region honorees, and several individual conference awards.
A native of Hampton, Va., Powell and his wife Lynn have three children and one grandson.
