Ed Powell enters his seventh season as head coach of the Bowie State University softball program in 2027.
Powell has built Bowie State into one of the premier programs in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), guiding the Bulldogs to three consecutive CIAA Championships from 2023 through 2025.
During the 2026 season, Bowie State continued its dominance with a 21-19 overall record and a perfect 16-0 mark in CIAA play, earning the program’s fourth consecutive CIAA Northern Division title and securing a No. 1 seed in the CIAA Championship Tournament. The Bulldogs placed six student-athletes on All-CIAA teams, highlighted by CIAA Pitcher of the Year Sydney Seals and CIAA Rookie of the Year Aaliyah Amos. First Team All-CIAA selections included Seals, Taylor Dawkins, and Mikayla Amos, while Presleigh Braxton and Coreena Dunham earned Second Team All-CIAA honors.
In 2025, Powell led the Bulldogs to a 27-20 overall record and a perfect 15-0 conference mark, capturing a third straight CIAA Championship. Bowie State led the conference in multiple offensive categories, including runs scored, hits, doubles, home runs, and RBIs, while producing six All-CIAA selections and multiple All-Region honorees. Powell was named CIAA Coach of the Year.
In 2024, Bowie State captured its second consecutive CIAA Championship, finishing 20-16 overall and 11-5 in conference play, with four All-CIAA selections and a CIAA Tournament MVP performance from Jayla Hill.
The 2023 season marked a historic breakthrough as the Bulldogs set a program record with 35 wins, won the CIAA Northern Division title, and secured the program’s first championship in its current run, establishing the foundation for sustained conference dominance.
Since taking over the program in 2020, Powell has transformed Bowie State into a perennial CIAA contender, producing multiple championship seasons, All-CIAA and All-Region performers, and consistent postseason appearances.
