(BOWIE, Md.) The Bowie State University Bulldogs jumped out to a 14 point halftime advantage and never looked back, cruising to a 77-55 victory over Columbia Union College to capture the Bulldogs Classic title.
Bowie State (2-0) led by as much as 16 points in the first half (37-21) and punished Columbia Union in the paint. The Bowie State Bulldogs scored 12 of its total 38 points in the paint over the first 20 minutes with junior
Cassin Diggs (Williamsport, PA, Williamsport, University of Pittsburgh) doing much of the damage. Diggs tallied 15 first half points, hitting five-of-nine from the floor. Neither the Bulldogs nor Pioneers shot very well overall during the first period. BSU's Bulldogs connected on 12-of-32 from the field (37.5 percent) while CUC's Pioneers managed only nine-of-26 (34.6 percent) from the floor. Bowie State took a 41-27 advantage into the locker room at intermission.
The closest Columbia Union (1-1) would get in the second half of play would be 11 points (49-38) at the 11:43 mark. From there, the Bowie State lead continued to swell and Columbia Union's shooting percentage would drop to 28 percent in the second half (seven-of-25). Bowie State controlled the boards as well, snaring 55 total rebounds compared to 30 for Columbia Union.
Diggs, a member of the All-Classic Team, led the Bowie State offense for the second game in a row, scoring a team-high 17 points and tied for game-high rebound honors with 10. Junior
Charles Richardson (Suitland, MD, Suitland, Montgomery - Takoma Park C.C.) and Classic MVP
Andrew Engel (Glen Burnie, MD, Old Mill, Colby C.C.) scored 12 and 11 points respectively in the victory. Senior
Curtis Massey (Upper Marlboro, MD, Largo, Dodge City CC) and junior
Delmar Carey (Charlotteville, VA, Monticello, Coastal Georgia C.C.) tallied eight points each for BSU's Bulldogs. Massey matched Diggs' rebound stats, ripping down 10.
Mark Moore led Columbia Union's offense with 17 points (11 in the first half) and included three-of-five) behind the three-point line. Dana Clark also scored in double digits, adding 10 points for the Pioneers. One other bright spot for the Pioneers was the play of Jamie Newton. Newton scored nine points to go along with six rebounds.
Bowie State returns to action – Tuesday, November 18th playing host to the Blue Bears of Livingstone College at 7:30 p.m.
