ST. MARY'S UPENDS BOWIE STATE 82-75 IN EXHIBITION PLAY

(WASHINGTON, D.C.)  Division III St. Mary's College of Maryland upended Bowie State University 82-75 in exhibition basketball at the Verizon Center.  BSU's Bulldogs are predicted to be the top team in the CIAA Eastern Division when the season begins next weekend.

The Seahawks of St. Mary's stayed within arms reach of Bowie State's Bulldogs early in the first half until BSU exploded on a 18-1 to open up a 34-20 advantage.  St. Mary's battled back to close the first half with a 15-9 run, only to trail by five at the break, 39-35. 

Bowie State's shooting percentage fell to 31 percent in the second half (11-of-36) but the St. Mary's shooting percentage increased from 32 percent in the first half (nine-of-28) to 53 percent (17-of-32) in the final 20 minutes of play.  Calvin Wise played a key role in the St. Mary's comeback, scoring 12 of his 14 total points in the second half.  Wise wrapped up the game as the Seahawks' top rebounder with nine.

St. Mary's Camontae Griffin torched the nets for a game-high 25 points which included 11-of-12 from the free throw line.  James Davenport also scored in double-digit, netting 16 points, 12 of which came from the charity stripe.

Senior Curtis Massey (Upper Marlboro, MD, Largo, Dodge City CC) led Bowie State in scoring with 18 points and juniors Charles Richardson (Suitland, MD, Suitland, Montgomery - Takoma Park C.C.) and Cassin Diggs (Williamsport, PA, Williamsport, University of Pittsburgh) added 17 and 15 points respectively for the Bulldogs.  Diggs hauled down a game-high 10 rebounds for BSU's Bulldogs.

Bowie State will officially open the season next Saturday (11/15) hosting the Bulldogs Classic and will face Lincoln University of Pennsylvania in the opening contest at 5:30 pm.
