BSU LADY BULLDOGS RUN TO 60-48 ROUT OVER VIRGINIA UNION

(BOWIE, Md.)  Bowie State's Lady Bulldogs used a 13-0 run midway through the second period to break away from Virginia Union, routing the Lady Panthers 60-48.  The victory keeps Bowie State unblemished in the CIAA Eastern Division at 3-0, improves the Lady Bulldogs to 7-8 overall and 6-2 in the conference.

Bowie State struggled tremendously in the first half, making just nine-of-34 field goal attempts (27 percent). Virginia Union faired on slightly better, making 10-of-38 field goals (36 percent). Virginia Union held a 25-22 rebound advantage in the first period and led Bowie State 24-22 at intermission.

Virginia Union's Lady Panthers increased their lead to nine early in the second half (32-23) before Bowie State went on a 15-5 run over a six minute stretch to tie the game at 38 with sophomore Lakisha Walker (Baltimore, MD, St. Frances Academy) capping off the run with a free throw. A Walker lay-up gave Bowie State a brief 40-38 lead but Virginia Union's Tiffany Clarke created the seventh a final tie of the game with 10:34 left to play.

Junior Bianca Lee (Temple Hills, MD, Archbishop Carroll) started the game winning run with a jumper while sophomores Teaunsha Robinson (Baltimore, MD, Baltimore Polytechnic) and Brittne Gowdy (Baltimore, MD, Milford Mill Academy), senior Denisha Kenion (Ft. Washington, MD, Oxon Hill) and Walker added the rest. Bowie State improved its second half field goal shooting to 50 percent (12-of-24) and the Lady Bulldogs defense clamped down to hold Virginia Union to 27 percent (nine-of-33). The BSU defense also created 23 total turnovers (11 in the second half); resulting in 24 Bowie State points on the night. There was also a major difference in free throw shooting. Virginia Union converted six-of-12 free throws in the game compared to 16-of-29 for Bowie State.

Virginia Union (5-9 / 2-6 and 0-3) was led by Tonaey Smith with 12 points on six-of-11 shooting and added six rebounds. Ashey Hill scored 11 points, making three 3-point field goals to go along with five rebounds.

Lee once again paced Bowie State with 14 points and Robinson added in 11 points and tied for game-high rebound honors with nine.

Bowie State will return to the court – Sunday (1/25) with a 2 p.m. tilt against the Lady Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith in BSU's A.C. Jordan Arena.
