Bianca Lee (Temple Hills, MD, Archbishop Carroll) hit a short jumper and added two free throws in the final 30 seconds to help Bowie State hold off Virginia State 64-60. The win keeps Bowie State perfect in the CIAA at 4-0 (2-0 in the East) and moves the Lady Bulldogs to 4-5 overall.
Sophomore
Teaunsha Robinson (Baltimore, MD, Baltimore Polytechnic) came off the bench to score a game-high 20 points and fellow sophomore
Brittne Gowdy (Baltimore, MD, Milford Mill Academy) added career-highs of 17 points and nine rebounds to lead Bowie State. Lee wrapped up the game with 11 points to go along with four assists.
The lead switched hands seven times in the first half but the Virginia State Trojans slipped into the locker room with a slim 31-28 advantage. Neither team shot very well from the floor in the first period, combining for 23-of-67. Bowie State's largest first half lead came at the 9:37 mark with the Lady Bulldogs holding a 23-16 advantage.
Virginia State maintained its lead until a jumper by BSU's Robinson put the Lady Bulldogs in front to stay (38-37) early in the second half. Bowie State pushed its lead to 11 points (50-39) with 13:12 left to play. Virginia State went on a 9-0 run over the next four minutes to trim their deficit to 50-48 by the 9:11 mark. Temperance Brantley (10 points) scored two field goals during that stretch to spark VSU's Trojans. Virginia State (9-2 / 2-2 CIAA / 0-1 East) cut the Bowie State lead to two twice in the final 2:16 but would get no closer.
Bowie State ended the evening hitting 22-of-60 field goals (37 percent), which included six-of-17 behind the arc (35 percent) and 14-of-21 from the free throw line (67 percent).
Katania Walker paced Virginia State with a team-high 15 points and Angela Brown contributed 14 points in the setback. Brown also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds for the Virginia State Trojans.
Virginia State hit 12-of-31 field goal attempts in the game (39 percent), including three-of-10 behind the arc (30 percent) and nine-of-11 (82 percent) at the charity stripe. VSU did outrebound Bowie State 41 to 39.
Bowie State's Lady Bulldogs return to action Tuesday (1/6), hosting the Lincoln University of Pennsylvania Lady Lions at 5:30 p.m.
