SLIPPERY ROCK SWEEPS LADY BULLDOGS IN SOFTBALL SEASON OPENER

(BOWIE, Md.)  Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania swept Bowie State University 12-5 and 7-2 to spoil the Lady Bulldogs season opener.

Slippery Rock's Shauna Walker pitched all seven innings of game one, allowing only 13 hits, five runs and recording one strike-out.   At the plate, Jordan Zeunges led The Rock going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Jessica Kortz, Kristen Brant and Kendra Kutz all tallied two RBI's in the contest. 

Bowie State freshman Shanae Smoot (Bel Alton, Md., LaPlata) led the Lady Bulldogs in hits in the first game, baging out a team-high three to go along with 2 RBI.  Seniors Tiffany Toney (Abilene, TX, Abilene Cooper, The University of Oklahoma ) and Virginia Hockey (Bowie, MD, Mount Saint Mary's University) along with junior Faline Brown (Inwood, W.Va., Hagerstown C.C.) accounted for two hits each in the opening game of the doubleheader. 

Senior Heather Enders (Glen Burnie, MD, Old Mill) pitched 5.1 innings in game one, struck out four and walked four.

On defense, Sheree Horvath registered 11 putouts at first base. Slippery Rock scored 12 runs on 10 hits and committed no errors. Bowie State only scored five on 13 hits and totaled 5 errors.   BSU's Brown paced the Lady Bulldogs defense with five putouts from her third base position.

In the second game of the afternoon, Shaylee Ianno led Slippery Rock to victory allowing only three hits.  The Rock took an early lead with one run in the first inning and two more in the fourth before Bowie State answered with two runs of their own in the fifth inning.   Senior Ashley Cook (Port Republic, Md., Calvert, College of Southern Maryland) was directly responsible for Bowie State runs, blasting a two-run homer to left field, scoring fellow senior Tricia Corbin.

Cook paced Bowie State defense with eight putouts and one assist.  Brittany Jones led the defensive effort for The Rock with ten putouts and one assist in the contest. 

Brown handled pitching dutles for BSU's Lady Bulldogs in game two, going all seven innings, struck out four and walked three.

Bowie State (0-2) returns to the diamond - Monday, March 16th, hosting West Chester University of Pennsylvania at 1 p.m. in a non-conference doubleheader.
