BOWIE STATE SOFTBALL SWEEPS JOHNSON C. SMITH 10-4 AND 16-1

GAME ONE BOX SCORE

GAME TWO BOX SCORE

(CHARLOTTE, N.C.)  The Bowie State University Lady Bulldogs played their first conference games of the season and mauled Johnson C. Smith University 10-4 and 16-1 in CIAA softball action.

Game one started off slow for both squads. Neither team scored in the first two innings; BSU got on the board first with a sacrifice fly junior Kelley Alexander (Damascus, Md., Covenant Life, Montgomery College) that brought home sophomore Danielle McClay (Silver Spring, MD, Montgomery Blair) from third.

The Lady Golden Bulls took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Sophomore outfielder Sabrina Cato smacked a two-RBI single down the right field line that allowed sophomores Allycia Watanabe and Ashley Williams to score.

Bowie State scored seven runs on eight hits in the fifth inning off JCSU fielding errors. Sophomore shortstop Kawehionapua Chan hit a RBI double to left field and scored in the sixth. Freshman Alexis Webb doubled to center, which brought home Chan from second. That was the last run in the game for the Lady Golden Bulls. The BSU duo of Alexander and McClay produced a run in the seventh to account for the 10-4 final.

BSU's Lady Bulldogs pounded out 18 hits in game one with senior Tricia Corbin (Glen Burnie, MD, Old Mill) leading the way with four hits in five at bats.  Senior Heather Enders (Glen Burnie, MD, Old Mill) notched her second victory of the year and paced the Lady Bulldogs with three RBI in the opener.

Sophomore Mauranda Elliott scored J.C. Smith's only run in the second game. Elliott came home from second base off a double by Watanabe. The Lady Bulldogs started the third inning up 5-1.  Senior Ashley Cook (Port Republic, Md., Calvert, College of Southern Maryland) belted a two-RBI homer to left field to cap off a seven run inning for Bowie State.

JCSU gave up four runs in the fourth to account for a 16-1 final score (game called due to NCAA run rule).  Bowie State racked up 16 hits in the nightcap which included seven doubles, two triples and two home runs.  Junior Faline Brown (Inwood, W.Va., Hagerstown C.C.) picked up the win, striking out five along the way.  Corbin and freshman Shanae Smoot (Bel Alton, Md., LaPlata) went 3-for-3 in the nightcap and Alexander tied for game-high RBI honors with three each.

Bowie State returns to action tomorrow (Sunday, March 22) against Livingstone College in Salisbury (N.C.).  First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
