BSU LADY BULLDOGS SPLIT DOUBLEHEADER AT FAYETTEVILLE STATE

(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) Fayetteville State University and Bowie State University split their conference doubleheader this afternoon at L.R. Saunders Park. BSU's Lady Bulldogs double up FSU's Lady Broncos in game one by the score of 10-5, but Fayetteville State manufactured a 1-0 decision in game two. 

Bowie State scored first in the opener after sophomore Danielle McClay (Silver Spring, MD, Montgomery Blair) scored on a fielder's choice by senior Virginia Hockey (Bowie, MD, Mount Saint Mary's University) in the first inning. Fayetteville State's Alicia Frank singled down the left field line scoring Dominique Mills to tie the game at 1-1 after one. BSU's Lady Bulldogs took a 6-1 lead after 4 ½ innings before Fayetteville State put four in the book in the bottom of the fifth inning, trimming the deficit to 6-5.

The visiting Lady Bulldogs answered with a four run sixth inning to account for the final 10-5 margin. Bowie State pounded out 12 hits in game one and Fayetteville State accounted for nine hits. Fayetteville State had five errors compared to only one for Bowie State.

Seniors Tricia Corbin (Glen Burnie, MD, Old Mill) and Tiffany Toney (Abilene, TX, Abilene Cooper, The University of Oklahoma ) led Bowie State with three hits and fellow seniors Heather Enders (Glen Burnie, MD, Old Mill) and Ashley Cook (Port Republic, Md., Calvert, College of Southern Maryland) had two hits each in the win. Enders improved her pitching record to 4-1 overall.

All of game two's offense was produced by Fayetteville State in the first inning. The Frank and Mills duo were responsible for the Lady Broncos lone run in the nightcap. Mills began the inning with a single to shortstop and then advance to second on wild pitch by BSU junior Faline Brown (Inwood, W.Va., Hagerstown C.C.). Fayetteville State's April Brown singled to left center, advancing Mills to third. Frank reached on an error by Enders resulting in Mills crossing the plate.

The Bowie State bats really went south in game two as the Lady Bulldogs managed only two bases runner over the final four innings. BSU's Cook reached on an error in the second and Toney reached base in the seventh inning, also by error.

The win improves the Fayetteville State record to 9-22 overall and 3-1 in the CIAA. Bowie State's record drops to 6-4 overall and 5-1 in the CIAA.
