LADY BULLDOGS SOFTBALL WRAP UP EASTERN DIVISION CROWN WITH DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP AT VIRGINIA UNION

(RICHMOND, Va.)  For the third year in a row, Bowie State University captured the CIAA Eastern Division softball title after sweeping Virginia Union University by identical 23-1 scores in the final regular season conference doubleheader.  The Lady Bulldogs will enter next weeks CIAA Spring Championships (4/16-18) as the top seed on East side with a perfect 8-0 record and 17-1 record in the CIAA.

Bowie State crushed Virginia Union pitching for 19 hits in game one with junior Kelley Alexander (Damascus, Md., Covenant Life, Montgomery College) leading the rout with a game-high four hits that included two home runs and six RBI. Senior pitcher Heather Enders (Glen Burnie, MD, Old Mill) (10-3) struck out eight Virginia Union players and helped her self, adding three hits.

Every Bowie State player got at least one hit in the opening game that included a pair of hits each for seniors Tiffany Toney (Abilene, TX, Abilene Cooper, The University of Oklahoma )Tricia Corbin (Glen Burnie, MD, Old Mill) and Virginia Hockey (Bowie, MD, Mount Saint Mary's University) and sophomore Danielle McClay (Silver Spring, MD, Montgomery Blair).

The BSU Lady Bulldogs did one better in terms of hits in game two, tallying 20 in the nightcap. Corbin paced the guests with four hits and six RBI while teammates Toney, Alexander, Enders and junior Faline Brown (Inwood, W.Va., Hagerstown C.C.) added three hits apiece. Brown, the pitcher of record, picked up win number eight of the year, striking out six in 3.1 innings.
