(BOWIE, Md.) The Bowie State University Lady Bulldogs captured another CIAA sweep today, beating the Shaw University Lady Bears 9-1 and 15-6. Both games ended early due to the 8-run mercy rule and ups BSU's record to 16-4 overall and 12-1 in the CIAA.
Senior
Heather Enders (Glen Burnie, MD, Old Mill) struck out a season-high 10 Lady Bears and junior
Kelley Alexander (Damascus, Md., Covenant Life, Montgomery College) recorded a game-high three RBI to help lead Bowie State to the 9-1 victory in game one.
Curtisha Jones scored the first run of the game for Shaw in the top of the first inning, but Bowie State's Alexander put the home team on top to stay with a two-run home run to left, scoring senior
Tricia Corbin (Glen Burnie, MD, Old Mill) from second and making the score 2-1 Lady Bulldogs.
Shaw (9-13, 9-7 CIAA) managed only one hit for the remainder of game one while Bowie State tallied eight total hits in the opener. Alexander and freshman
Shanae Smoot (Bel Alton, Md., LaPlata) paced BSU's Lady Bulldogs with a pair of hits each in game one.
Shaw's Lady Bears took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two on hits by Samantha Bohn, Malta Gumbs and Crystal Sanders.
Bowie State cut the Shaw 2-0 lead in half in the bottom of the second inning, but Shaw added two more runs in the top of third, getting two more hits off BSU starting pitcher
Tiffany Toney (Abilene, TX, Abilene Cooper, The University of Oklahoma ). Unfortunately for Shaw, Bowie State's offense came alive pushing four runs across the plate in the third and fourth innings and put the final nail in the coffin with a six-run fifth inning.
In terms of team hitting, Shaw ended the game with nine hits and Bowie State rocked the Lady Bears' Sanders for 11 hits. Errors also played in part in the outcome as Shaw committed four in game two.
Bohn, Jones and Gumbs led Shaw with two hits each in the nightcap.
Junior
Faline Brown (Inwood, W.Va., Hagerstown C.C.) led Bowie State with four RBI in game two and senior
Ashley Cook (Port Republic, Md., Calvert, College of Southern Maryland) went 3-for-4 from the plate as BSU completed the sweep of Shaw, winning 15-6 in game two. Toney picked up her first pitching victory of the year, striking out seven in five innings of work.
Bowie State travels to Chowan University (Murfreesboro, N.C.) for a non-conference doubleheader – Friday, April 10th beginning at 3 p.m.
