(BOWIE, Md.) The Fayetteville State University defense intercepted five Bowie State University passes and turned that into a 30-20 victory. The designated non-conference game puts the Fayetteville State and Bowie State records at 1-2 on the year.
After both teams punted on their first two possessions, Broncos running back Richard Medlin capped off a seven-play, 39-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run, giving FSU a 7-0 lead with 2:46 left in the first quarter.
Bowie State junior
Rodney Webb (Baltimore, MD, Milford Mill Academy) scored the first of his three touchdowns of the afternoon at the 4:54 mark of the second quarter, pounding in from one yard out. However, the point after by sophomore
Michael Gagne (Baltimore, MD, Parkville)was blocked. Fayetteville State place kicker Austin Turner gave the Broncos a four point advantage (10-6) about a minute and half later, booting a 49-yard field goal.
Fayetteville State added six more to the scoreboard with only 38 seconds left before halftime after Joshua Wilkins intercepted a pass from BSU freshman
Tyrae Reid, Jr. (Baltimore, MD, Baltimore Polytechnic) at the FSU three and returned it 97 yards for a touchdown.
Austin made his second field goal attempt of the game at the
9:53 mark of quarter three, increasing Fayetteville State's lead to 20-6. Bowie State cut the Broncos' lead to seven, 20-13, with 6:03 left in the third quarter. But an Austin Turner 25-yard field goal and Wilder's touchdown gave FSU a 30-13 lead with 7:59 remaining in the game. Webb would add his third touchdown for the Bulldogs to conclude the scoring late in the fourth quarter.
"We outplayed them in just about every statistical category, but you can't turn the ball over they we did today and expect to win", said Bowie State first-year coach
Damon Wilson. Wilson went on to say, "Even though we did get the result we wanted, I'm happy with the play of our freshman quarterback". Reid threw for a team season-high 299 yards, completing 19-of-38 passes.
Fayetteville State's Benjamin Williams completed 14-of-29 passes for 168 yards and a touchdown. Williams' passes went to five different receivers, with Bobby Wilder catching the lone touchdown from seven yards out.
Bowie State rolled up a season-high 440 yards in total offense with Webb leading the ground game with 110 yards on 24 carries and three touchdowns. Benjamin Williams led Fayetteville State's Broncos with 168 passing yards, completing 14 of 29.
Sophomore
Clifton Budd (Silver Spring, MD, Sherwood) (aka Dominique) recorded a Bowie State career-high 151 reception yards on seven catches. The BSU Bulldogs defense was led by juniors
Kyle Jackson (Baltimore, MD, Edmondson) and
Terence Peete, Jr. (Memphis, TN, Northwest) with nine and eight tackles each.
Fayetteville State will head to Salem, Va. next Saturday (9/19) to face Saint Paul's College. Bowie State will roll out the welcome mat for Livingstone College next weekend in the conference opener for both teams. Kickoff time for the BSU Bulldogs and Livingstone Blue Bears is set for 1 p.m.
