(SALISBURY, N.C.) Bowie State University's Bulldogs withstood a furious late second half run and held off the Livingstone Blue Bears 74-67. The win improves Bowie State's record to 9-4 overall and 7-2 in the CIAA.
Livingstone (7-6 / 5-3 CIAA) and Bowie State battled it out in the first seven minutes of the game, with
each team taking their chance at leading the game. With 10:01 left on the first half, Bowie State had a one-point edge. BSU junior
Eric Vann (Clinton, MD, Gwynn Park, Prince George's C.C.) scored a layup with 9:26 on the clock to spark a 14-2 run over the next 2:02 to increase the Bulldogs lead to 13 points with 7:24 left in the first half. Bowie State ended the first half with a commanding 42-27 lead after burning up the New Trent Gymnasium nets at a 62 percent clip, making 18-of-29 from the floor.
Livingstone's Blue Bears trailed by 17 points with 16:45 left on the clock in the second half before going on a 9-0 run to pull within eight (46-38). Unfortunately for Livingstone, Bowie State neutralized the Blue Bears run with a 14-2 to open a 20-point advantage.
Just when it appeared Bowie State was ready to deliver the knock out punch, Livingstone exploded with a 17-2 run to narrow the gap to five points (64-59) with 1:54 left in the contest. Duke Crews (Hampton, VA, Bethel, Univ. of Tennessee) with 14 points and 13 rebounds, his seventh double-double of the season, before fouling out late in the game. Other double figure scorers for Bowie State include Vann with 12 points and Stevens with 10 points.
Megail Cannon led Livingstone with 18 points to go along with seven rebounds. Jarred Stockton notched 13 points and added a team-high eight rebounds.
Bowie State will continue their North Carolina road trip Monday (January 18) with a 7:30 rematch against the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University.
