(WASHINGTON, D.C.) The University of the District of Columbia (5-3) maintained home court advantage, topping Bowie State University 54-40 in non-conference action.

BSU's Lady Bulldogs struggled from the field in the first half (5-of-25) of play and committed 16 first period turnovers. On the positive side, Bowie State held a 23-20 advantage on the glass in the first 20 minutes.

UDC led for all but one minute in the game. After the Bulldogs took the early 2-0 lead on a lay-up by junior Chanita Jordan (Philadelphia, PA, University City, North Carolina State), UDC struck right back with a three-pointer by Niqky Hughes with 18:50 remaining in the first half. The Firebirds never looked back as they held Bowie scoreless for the next seven minutes while building an 11-2 lead. The lead got as large as 12 points in the first half, and at the break the score was UDC 22, Bowie 13.

In the second half the Firebirds lead never shrank below 7 points, and the largest lead came right before the game ended, when Bonner hit a lay-up to put UDC up by 14 points with 53 seconds remaining. In the second half UDC outscored Bowie 20-16 in the paint, had 7 more points off turnovers, and outscored the Bulldogs 10-2 on fast breaks.

For the game the Firebirds shot 24-of-63 (38 percent) from the field, 2-of-11 (18 percent) from long range, and 4-of-7 (57 percent) from the charity strip. The Bowie State Lady Bulldogs shot 13-of-52 (25 percent) from the floor, 1-of-13 (7 percent) from beyond the arc, and 13-of-26 (50 percent) from the free-throw line. Senior Brianna Taylor was the leading scorer for the Bulldogs with 10 points.

The 40 points, field goal shooting percentage and 3-point field goal shooting percentage were all season lows for the Lady Bulldogs.

Kendra Johnson and Jamilia Bonner led the University of the District of Columbia with 11 points and Stacy Griffin added 10 points in the win. UDC's Lillian McGill ripped down a game-14 rebounds.

Bowie State (2-1) was paced by seniors Brianna Taylor (Upper Marlboro, MD, Riverdale Baptist School, Cheyney) with a team-high 10 points and Lakisha Walker (Baltimore, MD, St. Frances Academy)added eight points. Jordan and senior Brittney Jackson (Laurel, MD, Laurel) led the Lady Bulldogs with eight and seven rebounds respectively.

Bowie State University returns to the hardwood - Saturday, December 11th against Millersville (PA) University in the first game of the West Chester University “Carol Eckman Memorial Classic”. Tip-time for the Lady Bulldogs and Marauders is scheduled for 1 pm.
