(BOWIE, Md.)  Hampton University (11-19) scored one run in the bottom of the seventh inning to edge Bowie State 5-4 in game five of the Lady Bulldogs Classic.

Errors were the culprit in today's BSU Lady Bulldogs setback to Division I Hampton University, a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).  Bowie State was the visiting team on the scoreboard and opened up a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Freshman Megan Alexander (Damascus, Md., Damascus) held the Hampton Lady Pirates hitless over the games first five innings and increased the Lady Bulldogs lead to 3-0 through 5 1/2 innings.  However, Hampton roared back to take a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Hampton's Brooke Boykin broke up Alexander's no hitter with a blooper to short right field to lead off the sixth.  Sharde' Estep followed that with a single to center, advancing Boykin to second.  Boykin and Estep moved up 60 feet on a wild pitch and Kelsei Saunders joined them on base after a base on balls.  With two outs, Boykin scored Hampton's first run and Estep crossed the plate via a wild pitch, trimming the Bowie State lead to 3-2.  Hampton's Rebecca Magett recorded her first hit of the game, a two-run homer
Elizabeth Slater
to left field, shifting the advantage over to the Lady Pirates.

Bowie State senior Elizabeth Slater (Glen Burnie, MD, Lenoir-Rhyne Univ.) tied the game at 4-4 with a leadoff solo home run to left center in the top of the seventh.

Unfortunately for the Lady Bulldogs, Hampton's Saunders ripped a single up the middle of the Bowie State infield, scoring Boykin from third to close out the game.  With two outs and the bases empty, Boykin singled and Estep reached on an error by BSU's Justine Smith (Silver Spring, MD, James Herbert Blake).

Senior Faline Brown (Inwood, Hagerstown C.C.) releived Alexander in the bottom of the seventh inning and took the loss, dropping her season record to 6-7.

Bowie State (11-11) will host Coppin State in the final game of the weekend Classic.
