(PETERSBURG, Va.) Bowie State University remains unbeaten in CIAA division play, knocking off the Lady Trojans of Virginia State University 5-2 and 5-4 in a key conference matchup.
The Lady Bulldogs made a statement early in game one, bolting out of the box for a 4-0 lead in the very first inning. Senior
Elizabeth Slater (Glen Burnie, MD, Lenoir-Rhyne Univ.) jacked her second home run of the season in the top of the sixth to extend the Bowie State lead to 5-0.
Virginia State (9-15, 7-4 CIAA, 4-2 East) got one run back in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run to left by Takeia Jones. VSU's Lady Trojans pushed one more run across in the bottom of the seventh, but the damage had already been done.
Virginia State put the first runs on the board in game two, scoring a pair in the bottom of the second. Judy Hatch led off the inning with a single up the middle and later scored on a error. VSU's Jessica Curtis laced a double, scoring Curtis from first.

Kelley Alexander (Damascus, Md., Covenant Life, Montgomery College) to score from third in the top of the third and sophomore
Shanae Smoot (Bel Alton, Md., LaPlata) scored junior
Shalai Tabor (Waldorf, MD, Delaware State Univ.), tying things up at 2-2.
A soft grounder to third by senior
Faline Brown (Inwood, Hagerstown C.C.) with two outs in the fifth, scored junior
Danielle McClay (Silver Spring, MD, Montgomery Blair) from third, shifting the advantage over to Bowie State at 3-2.
Smoot added two more RBI to her season total in the top of the sixth inning, pushing senior
Kelley Alexander and Slater across the plate, extending the Bowie State lead to 5-2.
Virginia State made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh, closing the gap to 5-3 on a throwing error to first. Curtis hit a sacrifice fly to right scoring Kristen Rountree from third, making the score 5-4 with one out. Sharron Lipford and LaCara Hawkes popped out to close out the contest.
Bowie State (13-16, 7-1 CIAA, 4-0 East) returns to action tomorrow (April 1), travelling to Slippery Rock (Pa.) University for a non-conference doubleheader. Virginia State will host Lincoln University of Pennsylvania - Saturday (April 3) at 1 p.m.
