(NEW CASTLE, Del.) Wilmington University snapped a Bowie State University six-game win streak and defeated the visiting Lady Bulldogs in non-conference softball action at Asbury Field. The Lady Wildcats held on for a 4-3 victory in game one, and completed the sweep with a 12-6 win in the nightcap. The setbacks put Bowie State's overall record at 19-20.
Wilmington took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a Bowie State error, and added two more in the fourth on a two-RBI double off the bat of Kristin Garvin. Bowie State answered with a single run in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 3-1. BSU freshman
Megan Alexander (Damascus, Md., Damascus) led off the third with a walk and later scored an unearned run following a fielding error by the Wilmington pitcher. Wilmington added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 4-1. The Lady Bulldogs plated two unearned runs in the seventh, and trailed by just one (4-3). Kim Lawrence came in and recorded the last two outs for her third save of the season.
Wilmington (14-14-1) was led by Garvin, who finished 1-for-2 with a pair of RBI, while Amanda Cordrey was 1-for-3 with a double. Kinsley Parker was 1-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, while Heather Bush finished 1-for-2 with a run scored. Erin Tingle (4-2) earned the win, giving up three runs (all unearned) on just two hits, while striking out eight, in 6.1 innings of work.
Bowie State's only hits of game one came off the bats of senior
Elizabeth Slater (Glen Burnie, MD, Lenoir-Rhyne Univ.) and junior
Shalai Tabor (Waldorf, MD, Delaware State Univ.). Slater and Tabor recorded a single each in the first inning, but the Lady Bulldogs went silent after that. Senior
Faline Brown (Inwood, WV, Musselman, Hagerstown C.C.) lost the opener, striking out one in six complete innings.
The Wildcats of Wilmington got their bats going in game two, and jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first inning. The big blow came in the form of a grand slam from Garvin. Senior
Kelley Alexander (Damascus, Md., Covenant Life, Montgomery College) crushed a double to left center for the Lady Bulldogs in the top of the second, scoring freshmen
Amanda Hedgepeth (Odenton, MD, Arundel) and
Megan Alexander. However, Wilmington answered right back with three in the bottom of the frame. Again, Bowie State plated two the next inning and added two more over the next three innings to cut the lead to 9-6. Amanda Crockett came through in the bottom of the sixth with a three-run blast, giving the 'Cats a 12-6 lead that would hold until the final score.
Kelley Alexander and Hedgepeth led Bowie State's Lady Bulldogs in game two with a pair of hits each. The Alexander sisters were responsible for two RBI each in the nightcap.
Megan Alexander suffered the loss in game two, walking seven and gave up 11 hits.
Wilmington was led by Crockett, Cordrey, Nicole Gebhart and Brooke Berger with two hits apiece. Kim Lawrence (5-7) earned the win, allowing 10 hits in five innings of work.
The Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University will close out the regular season Monday (April 12) against the Lady Falcons of Saint Augustine's College in a conference single game beginning at 2 p.m. at Lady Bulldogs Field.
