BOX SCORE
(BOWIE, Md.) Bowie State University wrapped up their 2010 regular season in a big way, blanking the Lady Falcons of Saint Augustine's College 18-0. The victorious Lady Bulldogs improve their conference record to 14-1 and will enter this weeks' CIAA Championships as the top seed in the Eastern Division.
The three-time defending CIAA Champions of Bowie State put three runs on the board in the first inning and added two more in the second before Saint Augustine's got their first hit in the third inning. Jerrisa Lake (Christiansted, St. Croix) beat out a grounder to third in the top of the third to account for Saint Augustine's first hit of the game, but was quickly thrown out trying to steal second.
Diamond Andrews (Detroit, Mich.) hit a soft blooper just of the shoulder of Bowie State's third baseman in the top of the fourth inning, but that would be the final Lady Falcons hit of the afternoon. Senior
Breaun Garner (Beltsville, MD, Northwestern) scored BSU's sixth run of the afternoon in the bottom of the third and senior teammate
Annette Makle (Brandywine, MD, Gwynn Park) made it 7-0, scoring on a wild pitch, putting the Lady Bulldogs on the door step for an early mercy rule decision.
Bowie State's Lady Bulldogs exploded for 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth on just five hits. Saint Augustine's pitcher Shariah Davis (Atlanta, Ga.) really struggled finding the strike zone all day, walking 13 Bowie State players. A half dozen of Davis' base on balls came in the fourth inning.
Freshman
Amanda Hedgepeth (Odenton, MD, Arundel), sophomore
Shanae Smoot (Bel Alton, Md., LaPlata) and junior
Shalai Tabor (Waldorf, MD, Delaware State Univ.) led the victorious Lady Bulldogs with two hits apiece. Tabor went deep for the league leading 14th time this season and knocked in four RBI.
Freshmen
Megan Alexander (Damascus, Md., Damascus) and
Aiyana McNair (Baltimore, MD, Parkville) added three RBI each for Bowie State. Alexander relieved senior
Faline Brown (Inwood, WV, Musselman, Hagerstown C.C.) in the third, striking out three and allowed the two hits.
Saint Augustine's (1-24 / 0-15 CIAA) will close out their season tomorrow (April 13), hosting Elizabeth City State at 1 p.m.
Bowie State returns to action Thursday (April 15) in the opening round of the CIAA Spring Championships against the number four seed in the West. The Lady Bulldogs will begin play at 12 noon at the Petersburg (Va.) Sports Complex.
