TABOR AND HEDGEPETH HIGHLIGHT ALL-CIAA SOFTBALL HONORS

Eight Total BSU Lady Bulldogs Receive All-Conference Honors

The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) recognized Bowie State University junior Shalai Tabor (Waldorf, MD, Delaware State Univ.) and freshman Amanda Hedgepeth (Odenton, MD, Arundel) as the Softball Player and Rookie of the Year respectively. Other BSU Lady Bulldogs joining Tabor as members of the 2010 All-CIAA Softball First team are senior Faline Brown (Inwood, WV, Musselman, Hagerstown C.C.) and sophomore Shanae Smoot (Bel Alton, Md., LaPlata).

In addition to her shortstop position, Tabor played first and third base as well. She has played in all 40 games with 53 hits, 47 RBI, and 46 runs scored. Tabor leads the CIAA in home runs (14), has tallied 10 doubles and six triples. Tabor, a transfer from Delaware State University has a batting average of .424 in 125 at-bats.

Hedgepeth leads the team's starters with a batting average of .438, has 42 hits, scored 41 runs in 112 at-bats and is tied for team-high doubles with 10.

Senior Kelley Alexander (Damascus, Md., Covenant Life, Montgomery College) and junior Danielle McClay (Silver Spring, MD, Montgomery Blair) were selected to the All-CIAA Second Team. Alexander's sister Megan Alexander (Damascus, Md., Damascus) and Kristen Lee (Germantown, MD, Northwest) were named to the All-Rookie Team to round out Bowie State's honorees.

All eight Bowie State student-athletes along with the entire All-CIAA and All-Rookie selections will be honored during the CIAA Spring Sports Championship Banquet held Wednesday, April 14th on the campus of Virginia State University.

The Lady Bulldogs finished the regular season with a 20-20 overall mark, 14-1 in the CIAA, and captured their third straight Western Division title with an 8-0 record.

Bowie State University will begin the CIAA double elimination championships - Thursday (April 15th) in its quest for their fourth straight conference crown. The CIAA Championships will be played at the Petersburg (Va.) Sports Complex with the semifinals and championship game on the Virginia State University campus.
