BOWIE STATE SHUTS OUT SHAW 8-0

(PETERSBURG, Va.) Bowie State University opened the 2010 CIAA Softball Spring Championships with an 8-0 shutout of Shaw University. BSU's Lady Bulldogs (21-20) will face the winner of the Saint Paul's College / Johnson C. Smith University game later this afternoon at 5 p.m.

Bowie State held a 12-2 hit advantage and was led by freshman Amanda Hedgepeth (Odenton, MD, Arundel) with three hits to go along with two RBI. Seniors Elizabeth Slater (Glen Burnie, MD, Lenoir-Rhyne Univ.) and Faline Brown (Inwood, WV, Musselman, Hagerstown C.C.) along with freshman Justine Smith (Silver Spring, MD, James Herbert Blake) added a pair of hits as well for the Lady Bulldogs.

Brown (13-13) picks up the Bowie State win, striking out five and walked one.

Shaw (15-26) falls into the losers bracket and will take on the loser of the Saint Paul's College / Johnson C. Smith University game at 2:30 p.m. this afternoon.

Erica Lafrades and Curtisha Jones led Shaw's Lady Bears with one hit each. Detra Morrow (9-13) went the distance for Shaw, striking out three and allowed one walk.
