(ETTRICK, Va.) Bowie State University made it apparent early they would not be denied a trip back to the conference championship game, blasting Johnson C. Smith University 10-2. The loss eliminates Johnson C. Smith (16-23) from the championships. Bowie State (23-21) will take on Chowan University in the 2010 CIAA Championship game - Saturday (April 17) at 12 noon at the VSU Field.
Johnson C. Smith's Samantha Smith beat out a single to shortstop to leadoff the game. Kawehionapau Chan stepped to the plate and hit a double to left, scoring Smith from first and giving the Lady Golden Bulls an early 1-0 lead.
Bowie State responded by sending all nine batters to the plate in the bottom of the first, scoring five runs, all unearned, on three hits and three Johnson C. Smith errors. Freshman

Shanae Smoot (Bel Alton, Md., LaPlata) hit doubles and senior
Annette Makle (Brandywine, MD, Gwynn Park) added a single to account for BSU's five first inning hits.
The BSU Lady Bulldogs pushed one run across in the second and added a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings to close the door on Johnson C. Smith's season.
A throwing error by Bowie State's third baseman allowed Alexis Webb to reach base leading the fifth inning. Johnson C. Smith's next two batters flew out to center and fouled out to the catcher respectively. Smith recorded her second hit of the game, this time a triple to right center, scoring Webb. However, the deficit was just too large to overcome and the errors were devastating else well. Johnson C. Smith committed five errors in the loss.
