(BOWIE, Md.) Total dominance was the theme in Bowie State University's doubleheader thumping of Shaw University. The three-time defending CIAA Champion Lady Bulldogs romped to 10-2 and 15-1 victories over the Lady Bears.
Bowie State (19-18, 13-1 CIAA) recorded 26 hits over two games and the pitching duo of senior
Faline Brown (Inwood, WV, Musselman, Hagerstown C.C.) and freshman
Megan Alexander (Damascus, Md., Damascus) held Shaw to only six total hits. Brown won game one, striking out five, walked one, allowed four hits and improved to 11-12 on the year. Alexander (8-6) gave up two hits in the second game, walked one and struck out eight.
Senior
Elizabeth Slater (Glen Burnie, MD, Lenoir-Rhyne Univ.), junior
Shalai Tabor (Waldorf, MD, Delaware State Univ.) and sophomore
Shanae Smoot (Bel Alton, Md., LaPlata) led Bowie State's battery in the opener, contributing two hits each. Brown and freshman
Amanda Hedgepeth (Odenton, MD, Arundel) were the Lady Bulldogs top RBI producers, accounting for three each in game one. Hedgepeth also recorded her second home run of the season, a three-run shot to right in the second inning.
Monica Grimmage (Georgetown, S.C.) was Shaw's primary source of offense, giving Shaw their only lead of
game one via a two-run home run in the top of the first inning.
Tabor added to her league leading home run total, hitting her 13th of the season in the bottom of the first inning of game two. Tabor, a certain CIAA Player of the Year candidate, went four-of-four in the second game and pushed across three RBI. Hedgepeth and Smoot had three hits in three plate appearances each in game two and Slater was three-of-four and added a game-high four RBI.
Nikita Burroughs (Lithonia, Ga.) Aerial Sanders (Raleigh, N.C.) were the only Lady Bears to record hits in the nightcap. Shaw (12-22, 8-8 CIAA) travels to Lincoln University of Pennsylvania tomorrow (April 7) to face the Lady Lions at 1 p.m.
Bowie State is tentatively scheduled to host Saint Augustine's College in a conference makeup game – Friday (April 9) at 1 p.m.
