FINAL STATS

(GREENSBURG, Pa.) Sophomore Tyrae Reid, Jr. (Baltimore, MD, Baltimore Polytechnic) completed 11-of-14 passes for a game-high 170 yards and fellow sophomore Ramono Flowers (Largo, MD, Largo, Central Michigan Univ.) rushed for a game-high 72 yards, but the Bowie State Bulldogs fall short 20-14 to the Griffins of Seton Hill University. Junior Delano Johnson (Baltimore, MD, Dunbar) was the top Bulldog on defense, racking up a game-high 14 tackles.

"Simply put, they (Seton Hill) made plays and we didn't", said second year head coach Damon Wilson.  "We had six red zone opportunities but convereted only one and our special teams play was also an issue this afternoon."

R.J. Butler put the home on the scoreboard first at the 12:42 mark of the opening quarter on a 4-yard run. The touchdown was setup after Bowie State snap sailed over the head of junior punter Michael Gagne (Baltimore, MD, Parkville) and recovered at the Bulldogs 7-yard line. Steve Padilla added the extra point for an early 7-0 Griffins lead.

Bowie State had four red zone opportunities in the first 30 minutes but came up empty on every occasion. Gagne hit the right goal post on a 20-yard field goal attempt with 5:11 remaining in the first quarter.

Seton Hill's D.J. Lenehan flipped a six yard pass to Anthony Armstead, capping off a 7-play, 46 yard drive and increasing the Griffins lead to 14-0.

Bowie State sophomore Beks Amadi (Riverdale, MD, Bladensburg)  intercepted a Lenehan pass at the Seton Hill 36 yard line. Flowers pounded in from two yards and Gagne added the extra point, cutting the deficit to 14-7 at the 7:03 mark of the third.

Seton Hill began the fourth quarter with a Lenehan to Tyler McIntosh 21-yard pass and catch, pushing the Griffins lead to 20-7. Padilla's extra point was blocked by senior Derrick McPhearson (Columbia, MD, DeMatha, Hampton).

With 7:08 left in the contest, senior Gregory Jackson (Accokeek, MD, Gwynn Park) hauled in a 27-yard pass from Reid and pretty much walked into the end zone. Gagne's missed the extra point, but got a second chance after a Seton Hill penalty. This time Gagne drilled the extra point, cutting the margin to 20-14.

The Bulldogs defense held on Seton Hill's next possession forcing the Griffins to punt. Unfortunately for Bowie State, the punt hit off a BSU special teams player and recovered at the Bulldogs' 23 yard line. This miscue dashed any hopes of a Bowie State comeback with only 3:18 left to play.

Junior Tariq Jones (Baltimore, MD, Edmondson) rushed for 37 yards and BSU starting junior quarterback Andre Johnson (Clinton, MD, Surrattsville) added another 32 yards on the ground for the visiting Bulldogs. Sophomore Ridwan Cole (Bowie, MD, Bladensburg) led all receivers with a game-high 61 yards and junior James Proctor, Jr. (Capital Heights, MD, Suitland) totaled 46 reception yards.

In terms of defense, senior Sterling Grant-Jones (Baltimore, MD, Edmondson) was second on the team in total tackles with seven followed by junior Kenneth Turner (Oxon Hill, MD, Oxon Hill) with six and Marcelus Manear (Fort Washington, MD, Fort Meade), Kenyon Kinard (Baltimore, MD, Dunbar) and Beks Amadi (Riverdale, MD, Bladensburg, Salisbury) with five tackles each.

Lenehan led the Seton Hill offense with 163 passing yards, completing 12-of-20 and McIntosh paced the Griffins receivers with 53 yards. Danilo Bautista and Ricky Cardwell were Seton Hill's top tacklers with 11 and nine respectively.

The Bulldogs will travel just up the road from the Bowie State University campus next Saturday (9/4) to tangle with the Bears of Morgan State University. Game time is 6 p.m. at Hughes Stadium.
