(BALTIMORE, Md.) Senior Kyle Jackson (Baltimore, MD, Edmondson) and sophomore Bekewele Amadi (Riverdale, MD, Bladensburg, Salisbury) led the Bowie State University defense with a dozen tackles each. However, Morgan State University kicker Kemar Scarlett made the difference in the Bears' 14-7 victory over the Bulldogs.

Morgan State (1-0) drew first blood on a 39–yard field goal by Scarlett with 25 seconds left in the first quarter.

Senior Rodney Webb (Baltimore, MD, Milford Mill Academy) scored his first touchdown of the season, rumbling in from 10-yards, capping off a 9-play, 70 yard drive. Sophomore Michael Gagne (Baltimore, MD, Parkville) added the extra point making the score 7-3 Bowie State with 2:54 remaining in the second quarter. Morgan State's Scarlett booted a 44-yard field goal with 15 seconds left before halftime to pull the Bears to within one at 7-6.

Bowie State (0-2) gave away two points via safety at the 9:44 mark of the third period when a center snap sailed over the head of the punter, resulting in a safety and shifted the advantage back to Morgan State at 8-6.

Mr. Scarlett booted his third field goal of the game at the 13:57 mark of the final period, this time from 33 yards out extending the Morgan State Bears lead to 11-7. Scarlett added to the Bears lead, nailing a 46-yard field (his fourth of the game) with 2:50 left in the contest, capping off an 8 play, 33 yard drive. In terms of team statistics, Morgan State and Bowie State combined for 226 yards in total offense. Most of the yards came via the pass with Morgan State garnering 109 and Bowie State with 106. Bowie State ended the night with minus 33 yards rushing compared to a plus 44 for Morgan State.

Trevon Bennett
Trevon Bennett (Fort Washington, MD, Riverdale Baptist)
came off the Bowie State bench to lead the offense 89 passing yards but was sacked three times. Bennett completed 10-of-21 passes and was intercepted once. Junior Clifton Budd (Silver Spring, MD, Sherwood) was Bennett's primary target, hauling in six passes for a game-high 73 yards.

Donovan Dickerson completed 16-of-32 passes, hooking up with Morgan State's leading receiver Winfred Diggs five times for 44 yards. Jourdan Brooks was Morgan State's top ground gainer, rushing for a game-high 62 yards on 27 carries.

Bowie State University will continue its early season road swing next Saturday (9/11), traveling to the Fayetteville (N.C.) State University Broncos. Kickoff time is set for 6 p.m. in Luther “Nick” Gerald Stadium on the FSU campus.
