BOWIE STATE ROLLS TO 62-45 ROAD WIN AGAINST SAINT PAUL’S

(LAWRENCEVILLE, Va.) Bowie State University shrugged off a slow start and used a second half surge en route to a 62-45 victory over the Lady Tigers of Saint Paul's College. The win improves BSU's Lady Bulldogs to 9-7 overall, 5-4 in the CIAA and 2-1 in the division.

Saint Paul's spotted Bowie State an early 5-0 advantage before taking their first lead at 6-5 on a jumper by Kiara Walton. The Lady Tigers maintained a lead until sophomore Cortney Baynard (Dover, DE, Caesar Rodney) stuck a 3-pointer at the 6:12 mark of the first half, giving the advantage back to Bowie State at 17-16. Bowie State held on to the lead and headed into halftime with a 29-24 advantage.

Neither the Lady Bulldogs nor Lady Tigers shot very well from the field in the first half. Saint Paul's hit 10-of-31 from the floor while Bowie State went eight-of-22 in the first period.

Free throws were a key stat for Bowie State in the first half, converting 11-of-14 opportunities.

With Bowie State leading 35-31, the Lady Bulldogs went on a 15-0 run to break the game open. Saint Paul's responded with a 6-0 run and would only pull within 13 points for the remainder of the afternoon.

Senior Teaunsha Robinson (Baltimore, MD, Baltimore Polytechnic) joined the Bowie State 1,000 point club at the 7:57 mark of the second half via a tough lay-up in traffic, stopping the Saint Paul's run. Robinson ended the game with 10 points.

Field goal shooting only slightly improved for both teams in the final half of play. Saint Paul's made eight-of-23 (35 percent) while Bowie State hit 10-of-26 (39 percent) from the floor.

Bowie State was led by junior Chanita Jordan (Philadelphia, PA, University City, North Carolina State) and senior Brittney Jackson (Laurel, MD, Laurel) with a team-high 12 points each. Jordan also tied her season-high of seven blocked shots. Junior Juliette Turner (Atlanta, GA, John F. Kennedy) just missed a double-double, recording nine points and eight rebounds

Saint Paul's (2-13, 1-8 CIAA, 1-1 North) was led by Tiffany Merritt with a game-high 15 points. Jasmine Stewart contributed nine points and Alisha Hardley added eight points to go along with a game-high nine rebounds.

Saint Paul's won the battle on the glass, out-rebounding Bowie State 40-35.

The Lady Bulldogs return to action – Monday (January 31), hosting the Virginia State University Lady Trojans at 5:30 pm in BSU's A.C. Jordan Arena.
