(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) Senior
Eric Vann (Clinton, MD, Gwynn Park, Prince George's C.C.) tied his career-high of 24 points and sophomore
Byron Westmorland (Baltimore, MD, Mergenthaler, Baltimore City C.C.) chipped 19 points to lead Bowie State University to a 78-66 road win against Fayetteville State University.
It only took the Bowie State Bulldogs just over four minutes to take a double-digit lead and seized control of the FSU Broncos from the very beginning. However, Fayetteville State controlled the glass, especially on the offensive end.
Fayetteville State won the rebound battle but had no real success shooting the ball. The Broncos out-rebounded Bowie State 63 to 41 but shot a chilly 27 percent from the field. Fayetteville State went 10-of-41 (24 percent) from the floor in the first half and ended the night 22-of-81 overall.
Bowie State (6-2 / 1-0 CIAA) knocked down 15-of-34 (44 percent) from the field in the first half, which included 6-of-15 (40 percent) beyond the arc. Vann scored half of his points in the first period, hitting 5-of-9 from the floor which included 2-of-4 behind the 3-point line.
BSU's Bulldogs held a comfortable 40-27 lead at intermission and maintained a double figure advantage until Fayetteville State made a run to pull with eight (62-54) by the 6:39 mark of the second half. Fortunately for Bowie State, that's as close as Fayetteville State would get.
John Herrington led a foursome of scorers for Fayetteville State's Broncos, leading the way with 13 points. Herrington also led FSU with a game-high 13 rebounds. Sidney Evans and Tim Plummer added 12 points apiece and Ariel Robinson contributed 10 points. Fayetteville State drops to 4-4 overall and 1-1 in the CIAA with the loss.

“We were fortunate to get off to a good lead, especially on the road, but we have to do a better job rebounding”, said a very pleased Bowie State coach
Darrell Brooks. “We fought hard and defended well which negated their (Fayetteville State) success on the offensive glass, which really kept them in the game.”
Bowie State University returns home to play three straight home games, starting with the Winston-Salem State University Rams at 7:30 pm next Monday (January 10). Following that game, Bowie State welcomes Shaw University (January 13th – 7:30 pm) and will tangle with St. Augustine's College (January 15th) in a nationally televised game beginning at 5:05 pm.
