(HAMPTON, Va.) Johnson C. Smith quarterback Keahn Wallace and St. Augustine's outside linebacker Antonio Stewart were named as the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association's Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year, respectively, the league office announced on Wednesday. Selection of the All-Rookie Team is administered by the CIAA Sports Information Directors Association.
Kendall Jefferson paced the Bulldogs in All-Purpose Yards (104) which included a 42-yard punt return for a touchdown and ranked fifth on the team in rushing with 281 net yards.
Keith Brown ranked fourth on the team in rushing (328 yards) and also caught seven passes for 46 yards.
Wallace, who led the CIAA in total offense, finished the season completing more than 58 percent of his passes in throwing for 1,946 yards and 16 touchdowns. Averaging an additional 48.4 yards per game running the ball to go with five rushing touchdowns, Wallace averaged 264.7 yards of total offense per game, leading the category by more than 23 yards. Wallace, who started all nine games he played, was named as the CIAA Rookie of the Week three times this season.
Stewart finished the season with 55 total tackles for St. Augustine's, starting seven of the nine games in which he appeared. He added 1.0 tackle for loss, an interception, two pass breakups and one quarterback hurry. Stewart ranked third on the Falcons in total tackles, coming up with a team-high 12 tackles against Fayetteville State on Oct. 1.
The Rookies of the Year will be formally recognized at the CIAA Football Championship Luncheon on Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, at the Durham Convention Center. This event begins at noon and is by invitation only.
