Jasmine Jacobs added a season-high 16 points, but California University of Pennsylvania rolled to an 83-62 victory over Bowie State in the opening game of the Komen Shoot for the Cure Classic.
With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 6-3 this season while the Lady Bulldogs remain winless this season at 0-7.
Leading 15-14, California (Pa.) mounted a 13-2 run over three-plus minutes to stretch its lead to 28-16 on a layup by Amy Johns with 9:11 in the first half. The Lady Bulldogs trimmed the deficit to 28-21 before the Vulcans countered with a 13-4 run to expand their lead to 41-25. Bowie State cut the deficit to single digits, 41-32, before California (Pa.) took a 44-32 lead at intermission.
The Lady Bulldogs closed the gap to 52-49 by the 13:22 mark of the second half before the Vulcans put together another run, this time 17-6 over the next four minutes. With California (Pa.) holding a 70-60 advantage, the Vulcans closed the game with a 13-2 run over the final 6:40.
Bowie State sophomore
Brooke Miles recorded her fourth double-digit scoring game adding 11 points in the setback.
For the game, Bowie State shot 37 percent from the floor (21-of-53) and 75 percent from the charity stripe (15-of-20). In comparison, California (Pa.) shot at 44 percent clip from the field (31-of-71), which included 9-of-20 beyond the arc, and 63 percent from the free throw line (12-of-19). The Vulcans dominated on the glass, wrapping up the game with a 45-33 rebound advantage. Bowie State turned the ball over 25 times resulting in 26 points California (Pa.) points.
Stephanie Michael and Johns paced California (Pa.) with 19 and 17 points respectively. Emma Mahady and Selena Adamshick added 12 points each in the win. Adamshick was the leading Vulcans rebounder with nine.
The Lady Bulldogs return to action Monday (December 19th) at 2:30 pm versus the hosts and undefeated (9-0) Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
